Natural Birth

Mom was 2 weeks late..will I be too?

My mom was 2 weeks late with both my sister and me. Does anyone know if this has any bearing on when my baby will likely come? She ended up being induced with both of us at 42 weeks. I'm really hoping there is no connection between her labor and mine because the last thing I want is an induction.

  • My mom and I had fairly similar pregnancies and deliveries, but my mom and my sister's pregnancies and deliveries were NOTHING alike so I think it varies.  good luck

  • I don't think there is a strong correlation.  My mom has five children.  I came two days early.  My next brother came two weeks late.  The others were a week early, a week late, and close to the due date.

My first DD came two weeks early.  DD 2 came two weeks late.  I completely understand not wanting to be induced.  Labor started on its own with DD2 the day I agreed to an induction for health concerns.

  • I don't think there's a huge correlation between them, no.

I was 16 days late, and both my kids were born past 41 weeks or so. But my sister went into labor on or before her daughter's due dates.

    DS1 - Feb 2008

    DS2 - Oct 2010 (my VBAC baby!)

  • No, I don't think there's a strong correlation. My mom went late with all 4 of her kids (though I'm not sure by how much). I had DS 8 days late and DD on her EDD. Also, my mom and sister have each had 4 natural births, and none exceeded 8 hours of labor, so I was prepared for a similarly lengthed labor. Nope! DS was 30 hours. Every pregnancy/woman/LO is different!

(The only correlation I can think of is if you and your mom have similar menstrual cycles, and both have long cycles. Women with longer cycles tend to have longer gestational periods)

  • Not neccesarily. My mom had us 10 days late and I had my boys 10 days early so you just never know. I think you are most likely to labor like your sister, so if your sis has already had children I would ask her how her experiences were.

  • No, I wouldn't expect a correlation. Also, I know it is just semantics, but some women find it mentally helpful to consider 40-42 weeks (or even 37-42 weeks) as being the due period. Post-term doesn't actually start until 42 weeks (though, as I'm sure you read, there is a huge push in the US to induce at 41 weeks even though the average spontaneous delivery for a FTM is 41w, 1d).
  • No, there is no correlation.   My Mom had me (the oldest) spontaneously at 37 weeks and my first was born at 43 weeks.

I am aware that a lot of women are pressured and/or some do not feel comfortable going past 42 weeks, but you don't HAVE to be induced for date reasons.  If your baby is doing well and you are healthy, you could just wait it out.  ::shrugs::

  • My mom was on time with me and late with my brother.  I had my DS a week and a half early, do I'd so no.  It has no bearing on your pregnancy.

  • my mom (who has the EXACT same frame as me down to shoe size and ring size and bone structure) delivered both me and my brother 3 weeks early and hemorrhaged after both.  I had DS 2.5 weeks early but I was induced so it doesn't really count.  no hemorrhage.

As you can see on my ticker, I am now 40.5 weeks.  no correlation with gestation here.

  • My mom was, in theory, 3 weeks late with me when she was induced and ultimately had a c-section which resulted in 2 repeat sections. I went into labor a week before my due date with both kids and had 2 very positive NBs, not similar at all!

  • not necessarily, My mom had me at 37 weeks and my sister at 38 weeks.

I had DD1 on her due date and DD2 the day before her due date

  • My mom had me at 41+3, and my LO came at 40+1.

    I don't think there's any correlation.

This is a great point. No one knows exactly when you got pregnant. Even if you know when you ovulated, I don't think you can tell the exact time implantation occurred.

A woman who ovulated on cycle day 14 will be further along in her pregnancy than a woman who ovulated on day 24, even if they started their last period on the same day (the date that's typically used to measure the "beginning" of pregnancy).

I was born two weeks late. (I'm an only child.) DD was also born two weeks late (induced).

I do tend to have long menstrual cycles, and always suspected that DD was actually closer to 41 weeks than 42 weeks. (Her EDD was based on my LMP date. It was "confirmed" via early ultrasound at 8w4d -- she measured 8w0d, but my OB refused to adjust my EDD because it wasn't off by a full week.)

Because of that, I've charted with my last two pregnancies. DS was born at 41w4d per LMP, but right on his EDD per my conception date. Obviously I don't know what will happen with this one, but my EDD per conception date is 5 days later than my EDD per LMP.

I explained all this to my mom at one point, and she said, "Hmmm. I didn't know all that when I was pregnant with you." I've also never discussed menstrual cycles in depth with my mom. But if she does indeed have long cycles like me, and she didn't know about conception dates and all that like I didn't with DD, then it makes sense that we ended up birthing at similar points in our pregnancies!
