ladies who have broken bones...

How did that pain compare to childbearing? Silly question, I know, except I've never broken a bone and dh has and he wants to know how it compares since he obviously cant experience labor himself.

Re: ladies who have broken bones...

  • It doesn't compare AT ALL. When I broke my foot and my hand (at different times) it hurt and freaked me out because I knew I was going to be seriously handicapped for a while. But labor was empowering in some ways and REALLY brought DH and I together. It was looooong but we were working towards something. Pushing for three hours, on the other hand, was an out of body experience. I have never felt so alone in my life and I was surrounded by people who love me. It is like having the biggest, hardest job to do in the world and having to do it without any help. Yeah... This is hard to describe.

My family is a Foreign Service family. Families like mine are posted in every corner of the globe. We live our lives away from family, friends and the conviences and comforts of home. We often live and work in dangerous places among those that misunderstand our intentions and purposes. Sometimes members of our ranks sacrifice our lives to further diplomacy.  Please remember that we serve too. And I'm always open to questions.

I felt like this exactly!!  I felt so incredibly alone and somewhat disconnected from reality.  Helpless and empowered all at the same time.   I don't think you can even try to compare to any other kind of experience because it involves so much more than just physical pain.

  • I broke my leg once, and the pain was not as bad as labor. Let's just say, if the initial pain from the break came every 5 minutes for 20 hours, then it would be a fraction of the labor pains.

  • On a scale of 1 - 100, broken bone would be a 10 and labor would be 100.

  • How sweet he's curious. It Sounds like he's processing the experience from his perspective and that's neat he wants to try to see it from your experience!!!
  • I fell and had my arm broken in half, bent backward in the middle of my forearm pointing toward my elbow.  It hurt.  A lot.

I would rather have had to go through that like 6 more times than endure another pitocin contraction by the time they came to give me my epidural.  I made it through five hours of pitocin, and by that point I think having my skin peeled off would have been more enjoyable.  The broken arm was nothing.  I didn't cry until a few hours later, when I finally got some morphine and could relax.  When I was having contractions I thought I was actually losing touch with reality.

I'd put broken bone near 25 and labor at 100  ;)

    This is a great comparison!

  • Labor was definately worse--  I broke my foot/ankle- as long as I didn't move it the pain wasn't too bad.

Contractions you can't control like that, they come and hurt no matter what you do.  (I was induced so all my contractions were piticon contractions- are natural ones different?)
