  That is nothing compared to what I heard some cultures do with the cord and placenta!

  DH was telling me (in a very disgusted tone) about an African culture/tribe where the father eats the placenta after the mom gives birth. DO WHAT? OMFG.

  Eww.

  BTW - I will not be giving any of my baby's parts to anyone for anything.?

  Ok, so my husband was reading a Jamaica Kinkaid book last weekend for one of his classes.  I don't even know if I spelled her name right, but where she was from, they would deliver the afterbirth and sew it into the baby's clothing to ward off evil spirits.  I had to say it.  But yeah, GROSS!

  The most common tradition is to eat the afterbirth...people think it is good luck and also that it makes the mom produce healthier breastmilk
