(xp) Zoloft while BF

My DD is 3 weeks tomorrow. I cry at least once per day. Today seemed more intense so I called my midwife and she prescribed zoloft as she thinks I have PPD. I remember that the baby blues/PPD peaked with my son at around 3 weeks. She also prescribed an anti-depressant at that time but I never took it. I really don't want to take it now as I am concerned of the effects on BF. My mw says it is safe but the pharmacist said that it can aggitate baby and also disturb their sleep. Any experience taking zoloft while BF?

I feel like I want to give it another week or so to try and get it together before I take anything...but I also dont want things to get worse.

Thanks for any thoughts/suggesions.

Re: (xp) Zoloft while BF

  • I just got a prescription yesterday from a postpartum psychiatrist...this is after meeting with a postpartum physiologist who I am going to continue seeing.  Personally, I think it is irresponsible of your MW to just hand you a prescription- especially at 3 weeks postpartum when the baby blues are at their peak.  IMO that is not PPD yet...PPD is when the weeping, anxiety, etc. continues past the first few weeks.

That said, if you do feel like you need the Zoloft, it is know for being the safest option.   The pharmacist is required to tell you all the side effects, but the phyc that I saw said that she has never heard of a baby have a reaction to it- and she works extensively with PPD patients.  The smallest dosage (where I am starting) does not pass through the milk.  Higher dosages (which I will probably need- most women cannot get by on the smallest dosage unfortunately) only pass very minimal amounts- ones that really don't affect the baby in a way.

The thing is- you should be monitored when you start taking the Zoloft...or any medication like this.  My perscription is only for a month and I go back to the phyc. in three weeks.  She is also going to be in contact with my phycologist so they can make sure it is working for me. Is your MW planning on doing this for the long haul?  What if you need a stronger prescription?  What if you don't feel like it is working right in a few months?   What happens when you are ready to go off it?  What if you need to talk out some of your feelings?  There is a lot more to treating PPD than throwing medication at it.   Just things to consider.

  • I agree with the PP on everything.

I have been in Zoloft for anxiety for 4 years now, including through both pregnancies and breastfeeding both kids.  There is some risk of side effects but for me the benefits outweigh the risks.

  • I have a personal history and strong family history of depression, and have been taking Prozac during my pregnancy. I will switch to Zoloft once the baby is born, as I have been told it is the safest for breastfeeding.

  • Here is an article from Kellymom about antidepressants & BFing, including Zoloft:

I suffered from PPD for about a year before going to therapy & didn't get on meds until 19 months. I regret not going on sooner. Having PPD is not good for you or baby. I went off Lexapro for this pregnancy & had to go back on a month ago - as much as I hated to do it, I knew I needed it.

That being said, I wouldn't jump on meds @ 3 weeks out unless you're having intrusive or suicidal thoughts (intrusive as in thinking about hurting your baby or something terrible happening, even though you know these aren't logical), or you just know you need it. I would wait a few more weeks if you can to see if your emotions calm down on their own. As several pp's said, you're at the height of baby blues right now. Don't wait too long if you decide to wait though.
