Recommendations for somewhat healthy eating?

Hi, all.  I'm 7 wks today (Yay!!!!) and have been slammed with nausea 24/7.  I've been doing great eating healthy up until this last week, when the nausea started. Unfortunately, now the only thing that's been settling my stomach and that hasn't completely repulsed me are big, heavy sandwiches, more specifically, meatball subs and cheeseburgers.  Clearly, these aren't the healthiest options and I definitely can't be eating those daily for the next several weeks until the nausea (hopefully) passes.  So, any recommendations for healthier options that might be equally as filling?  I was thinking grilled chicken, but even thinking about raw meat is making my stomach roll.  Then I was thinking BLT's, but I'm concerned about the bacon.

I keep hearing that at this point, I should just eat what it is I'm craving (within reason) so I'm not force feeding myself, but clearly that doesn't mean I should be on a diet of cheeseburgers.  Any ideas?

 TIA

  • Try to swap healthier versions of the things you're craving.  Veggie burgers or ones made with 92/8 beef or ground turkey - same goes for meatballs.  This should pass relatively soon so just hang in there!

  • I too am going through this phase, though it is starting to ease just a little finally. My cravings were french fries and peanut butter sandwiches. I opted for baking fries at home and whole wheat bread to get some nutrients in. I love chicken and prior to being pregnant would eat it almost everyday. Now I start dry heaving if I think about putting it in my mouth! The only exception to this is Chick-fil-a nuggets, which fortunately aren't too bad for you! Don't force yourself to eat things that don't sound appealing as they may make you throw up and then that defeats the purpose of eating those healthier things! I agree with the suggestion to eat a lighter version of what you are craving. Lean ground beef or ground turkey are great options, and still packed with protein. Is there a chance you could be anemic? That could also contribute to your beef cravings as your body often makes you crave what you need.

  • Salmon burgers! You can get thin sandwich bread (which is only about 100 calories- get the whole grain) and then pick up salmon burgers. They are awesome and LOADED with omega 3's.

That's actually a really good question.  I'll have to bring that up when I go to my doc next.  I'm on prenatals plus an additional 1mg of folic acid, but it's definitely something worth looking into.  Thanks!

  • I was told to eat a handful of almonds for the nausea and that seems to work for me so far. But the nausea isn't overwhelming at this point or anything. Maybe if you ate something like almonds or crackers/bread first just to counteract the nausea a bit then other food might be more appealing?

IDK if that helps. I hope you feel better soon!

  • Try piling on some healthy additions to your cheeseburgers - avocado, lettuce, tomato, etc.

  • It sounds like you may be craving iron. You may want to see if you are anemic. I had the same problem early on and actually went to my doctor I was so worried. She told me to drink as much water as I can tolerate and drink gatorade within reason to help me stay hydrated, and just eat as many carbs as I can until I can eat again. She told me with the prenatal vitamins the baby will get everything it needs, and if I eat salty foods like crackers and pretzels my body will crave liquids which will keep my hydrated. It won't last forever, so just do what you can! It's not like you are going to live on this diet forever. Cut yourself some slack and just call your doctor if you get worried!
