Feeding vent

Feeding Scar is getting more and more frustrating. Every feeding session is taking 1-1 1/2 hour, and I spend an average of 7 to 8 hours a day total nursing her. On top of that I am getting painful plugged ducts weekly. At 3 month, she only weighs 11lbs 3oz. She was 7lbs 10oz at birth, and was almost 11lbs last month. When pumping, I get about an oz out an hour total from both sides, when taking a bottle she eats about 5 oz every 2-3 hours. I know pumping isn't always a good indicator on your production, but that is a huge discrepancy. She seems healthy and happy other then her marathon eating sessions, Ugh, I guess this is a vent more then anything else, I'm just not sure if I'm giving her enough.

Re: Feeding vent

  • I can't even imagine the frustration. My DD only eats for 10 minutes usually, but will comfort suck/feed for 30 minutes at night and it gets to be frustrating.

Are you sure she "needs" 5oz to be satiated? I know my DD only eats 4oz and is totally fine with that for 3-4 hours. I know all babies are different, but you could always try cutting back if you're worried about your supply and you're not worried about her gaining.

I also take Fenugreek and it seems to help, if you want to try increasing your supply...

  • DANG! Does she pull off a lot or is it constant sucking? That is a long time to be feeding!

  • I'm with you on this one. Rose usually takes an hour or longer.

Thats what it takes to insure she isn't screaming for more food in an hour. I'm not super worried about her weight gain, but I also don't think it's as much as it should be. I am going to buy some fenugreek at the store tomorrow, I've been putting it off since I really hate the smell of maple syrup. If it works, I might end up being an EPer because I feel like I'm neglecting my other kids with as much  time as I spend feeding her. That really isn't something I wated to end up doing, though!

Nope, doesn't pull off much. It's pretty much constant sucking. She has a paci that she will use, but not if I unlatch her before she is done. My bewbs hate me!

  • Have you tried drinking a beer?  Seriously... when my supply seems to dip and Declan starts wanting to eat for longer periods and more often (usually during a growth spurt) I enjoy a cold one or three and the girls fill right up!!  As a result, he is done faster, and the bewbs are thankful haha!  It was a tip from a nurse at the hospital as some "mom to mom" advice.

I've also heard that the yeast in beer helps with milk production. My ds will stay on my boob all day if I let him but he usually only eats for about 10 - 15 mins. After that he uses me as a pacifier.

  • I was getting super bad clogged ducts as well, so I feel you there. Are you wearing an underwire bra? That was definitely the cause of mine and as soon as I stopped, it's been much better.

Definitely remember that pumping is not at all an indication of your production, but have you tried compressions while pumping? That seems to help me. Take heart, babies are supposed to get more efficient the older they get so hopefully she will start speeding up. GL! My boobs would be falling off if I was nursing 7 to 8 hours a day!

I haven't tried that because I hate been, but I might need to.

I stopped wearing an underwire, hopefully that will help. I keep waiting for her to be more effetiant, but she's getting worse!

  • Have you tried pumping after each feeding?  That might help to increase your supply.  Also, try massaging your boob while she's eating to express more milk and also try pumping one boob while she is nursing the other.  Have you seen a lactation consultant to check if her latch is good?
