Genetically, I have terrible teeth. Straight, white - but break when you look at them too hard and growing up had a terrible dentist and have had to have all the work he did re-done.
Nothing shocks me anymore with the cost of dental work. At my dentist, who I picked because he has massage chairs and a TV on the ceiling so I can watch the Golden Girls and is liberal with the pain killers (so I no longer have anxiety about going)- I have to pay the full she-bang up front and then my insurance sends me reimbursement.
Yikes, that really stinks. I would call the insurance company and see why you are having to pay so much but I know when I got my root canal and new crown, it was over $1500.

I'd be PISSED. I've always gotten a breakdown of anything that goes beyond insurance before it's done.
Did he have dental surgery? Because I got all sorts of random bills after I had my tonsils out.
honestly I don't even know what he had done. I think just some crowns fixed or something. Nothing too crazy. Nothing that invovled me having to drive him, him having a day off work or him getting pain meds to take home.
Maybe fixing some fillings? DH was in the marines and I guess the navy does your dental work or something... If he opens his mouth, it's pretty much all metal. I think they were fixing it so it looks like the color of your teeth type thing/not metal fillings.

Oh sweet Jesus, he let theNavy doctors touch him?
Replacing fillings isn't cheap. If they quoted, they should have given you warning if it was going to be far more than what they expected.
he also let some guy put an IV in his forehead... I'm not working with the sharpest tool in the box
My dental office always has you sign off on the expected cost, & they make it very clear that your insurance may not cover anything at all. I also did billing for a dentist when I was in college, & advising the patient of these costs ahead of time was very important.
Most dental insurance plans are 100/80/50, so you can expect to pay 20% + deductible for fillings & stuff, & 50% + deductible for crowns, root canals, etc. Also, lots of companies have time limits, so if he got those fillings on the same teeth within a certain number of years they may not cover it again until the time is up.
Te insurance company usually gives an explanation of benefits to your dental office when they pay, so you can call the office & see what the deal is. It wouldn't hurt to let them know that they should make estimated costs known to the patient.
2012 Races: 3/18 Shamrock Shuffle 5k; 4/14 E.R. Race for Autism 5k (PR! 25:58); 6/9 Riudoso Sprint Triathlon; 6/24 Chunky Monkey 10K; 7/29 Cochiti Lake Olympic Triathlon; 9/16 Chips & Salsa 1/2 Marathon; 10/21 Duke City 1/2 Marathon; 12/2 Rock & Roll 1/2 Marathon in Vegas!
I asked my office for an estimate. They offer a 15% discount if you pay in cash verses a credit card, so that helps a little bit. I would call the office and see if they do anything like that.

I thought you wrote this about me!! Except no tvs at my dentist, but they do hand treatments, laughing gas, headphones, blankets....
I too have to pay up front and I always have them run it through insurance first.
It was a long road for our family...our 3 angels in heaven are always watching over us!!!
I inherited bad teeth. After 6wks of severe ms with pg/miscarriage #2, I ended up with 10 cavities and an abcessed root canal treated by an endodologist (and the original root canal was done poorly, causing 2 extra visits, and then a surgical procedure to compensate). That was almost $3k out of pocket after insurance, and a lovely reminder of my miscarriage every time I went. So yeah, way too much dental work in my past, and it's expensive. A lot depends on your company and your dentist's office. I love my office because when I went through this, they did sit down and calculate how the insurance would cover the fillings. It's always possible they mis-billed, or they haven't received payment from the company yet and their bills are automated/every 30 days. It never hurts to call and double check.

I am legally required to tell you that a person that does root canals is an endodontist, not an edodologist. LOL, ok not really legally required, but my inner dentist makes me.
And, I'm on my mac so I can't get my playful and kidding demeanor across to you in a winky smiley face so please don't get offended!
I always ask becasue our insurance only covers a certain percentage of work and it depends on what I'm having done. That way I know what to expect and we talk about waiting on certain things if possible.
