Success after IF

Is your 3yo fussy all.the.time?

Ahhhh the whining! James is so fussy lately. I'd heard 3 was hard but, man, it seems like he is never happy unless we are on a walk or playing outside. While we do that a lot, those activities do, unfortunately, have to be interrupted for things like meals, baths, getting dressed, going to bed, etc. Lately, all of those things turn into a scream fest every day. Last night I thought our neighbors were probably going to call the police because he screamed so much in the bathtub it sounded like he was being tortured (nothing was wrong--- the water wasn't too hot, etc, he just didn't want to take a bath). As a bonus, his screaming terrified Ben and Ben screamed too.

I am for the most part able to retain my composure and patience during these tantrums, try to be cheerful and distract him with other things, etc., but it's like he gets "in the zone" for the tantrum and just won't stop.

Is this normal 3yo behavior? Please tell me it gets better!

  • I wouldn't describe Claire as being "fussy" all of the time, but the mood swings and sometimes for no reason at all, are crazy!  I try and keep it in perspective that what might be "nothing" to me is "something very important" to her, but somedays it's seems it's because the wind blows.  I try and just give her space to get herself together but that's not always possible.

     I call it toddler bi-polar.

  • I think that maybe kids hit that part of life at different times. I know that Trig was a total nightmare right before he turned 3 and now he isn't perfect  but he is much better. Right now I am dealing with Grayson being a mess - he takes trains and hits Trig and I am really not sure what to do about it - he's not responding to discipline. Anyway my point is that Trig got better and now his biggest issue is that he fights with his younger brother.

Maybe not all of the time, but my girls seem to take turns so it seems like someone is screaming, whining, or fussing most of the time.  Occasionally we have have moment when both are happy, but they seem rare. :-)  Evenings when they are tired and hungry seem to be the worst at the moment.  I had one that screamed through most of dinner Wednesday night, then the other screamed through most of dinner last night.  Thankfully they are pretty cute when they aren't fussy. :-)

  • Isabel goes through phases. It's enough to make you want to pull your hair out for sure!

I could be off but "the zone" he's getting in sounds like his PDD-NOS to me. I know Isabel gets like that and I know she hears nothing at that point.

I hope he is just going through a phase and that it's almost over.

Ive had many of the, I think the neighbors are going to call police moments:/ Sorry

  • Yes, my DS is exactly as you described: dinnertime, baths, changing clothes, and bedtimes usually really suck. I have yet to find a way to deal with the behaviour or, better yet, avoid it altogether. I'm hoping he'll just grow out of it really soon.

I mentioned some of the issues to my DCP this morning, just making conversation, really, and she announced that she's going to put together an information package for me re setting limits and boundaries for him. Umm, thanks?

This is pretty much our story exactly.  Right now, DS is much better than DD, although he had a period a few months ago that was a nightmare.  DD is the stubborn almost 2 year old that wants it her way.  Her favorite things to say are "NO!" and "DON'T!"  I hope this means that her 3's will be a breeze.
