Cloth Diapering

XP: Diaper Rash

The monster has developed the most insane diaper rash between his butt cheeks.  To the point where he is now is disposables (we normally cloth diaper) and slathered in A+D ointment.

I *think* what is happening is he is pooping in the middle of the night and then sitting in it.   Has anyone had this problem?  Should I wake him in the middle of hte night to check his diaper?  Or should I wait this out to see if it clears up?

I feel so bad for the little guy because he has this rash and his first two teeth are starting to sprout :(

Re: XP: Diaper Rash

  • Aww I grew up right near Plymouth Meeting! I'm in Lancaster now :)

I would give him a sniff without waking him up.  That can definitely be your culprit!

  • My DD had a rash in the same place and it was horrible and red and looked like a burn. I we switched to disposables for a while too, but it didn't seem to help. What did help was adding some baking soda to her bath and making sure that she had a nice thick layer of diaper cream at every change (Triple Paste worked best for us). I have a friend who swears by adding some maloxx to your diaper cream to help neutralize the acid in the the poop. It may be worth a try. Good luck with your little guy!

  • We got an Rx diaper cream which cleared it up in one day, then I started changing her and listening for pooping behavior at nights haha. Disposables give her a rash naturally so we have always had to use A&D when using disposables.
  • We have this problem with my daughter. I will go in periodically and sniff her bottom. Also if she starts to stir for longer than a few a minute I will go in and check her bum. Horrible for CIO, but better for her bottom.

For overnight I use a fleece liner, then slather her bottom with Penaten cream, then a layer of Live Clean Non-Petroleum jelly to act like a barrier. It's the only combo that keeps a layer on the skin for 12 hours (my daughter poops in the very early morning).

You also mention that your little guy is teething, this could also be the culprit. Teething causes their poop to be more acidic, causing rashes.
