Natural Birth

Lurker Question: Arnica

Hi Everyone!

I read this board frequently to prep for our upcoming labor!

A friend told me her midwife advised her to take Arnica during labor.  I asked my doctor about this, and she hadn't heard of it.  Does anyone have experience with taking Arnica during labor?  I've tried Google and read mixed things.  A doula told me to take 3 pills every 30 minutes, but that seems like a lot!  Any advice would be great!

Thank you so much and I appreciate all the inspiration I get from reading this board.

Re: Lurker Question: Arnica

  • Arnica is typically used for bruising and as a reliever of symptoms of shock. I am not sure how your friend is using it, but if it is for shock/stress treatment, I would recommend rescue remedy instead. There is a ton of stuff about rescue remedy online. If it is for bruising/muscle soreness, you'd be better of taking it post pregnancy as it is not a preventative.

  • Interesting.  I've never heard of that usage as I've only ever used it topically for bruising and even then I've found calendula works better for me.

I'm curious to know what the reasons for her recommendation to take it that way would be.

  • i've only ever used it topically as well, and like pp said, it's not preventive.

i use rescue remedy occasionally. i think my MW gave me some during labor when i nearly had a panic attack.
