Shampoo, facial moisturizer, and deodorant recs?

Looking to switch to a less toxic shampoo and conditioner.  I've been using Desert Essence, but would rather have something that's rated higher with EWG.  Also looking for a safe facial moisturizer with sunscreen, and some deodorant that works without the toxins!

I've been using stuff that's moderately nontoxic, but I'd like to get new items that have excellent EWG ratings and are organic, if possible.

Am I asking too much??

Re: Shampoo, facial moisturizer, and deodorant recs?

  • I like the GoodonyaToo shampoo from Etsy (https://www.etsy.com/shop/GudonyaToo?section_id=5282383). I haven't tried their conditioner but the shampoo worked great on my hair. I did have to switch from washing my hair every day to washing it every other day but I'm not sure that's a negative :)

I don't use facial moisturizer so I am of no help there.

I use the Crystal Essence Pomegranate roll-on deodorant and I really like it (https://store.thecrystal.com/crystal-essence-roll-on---pomegranate-p10.aspx).

  • I like the Desert Essence shampoos and conditioners, so I guess I'm not much help there. I didn't realize they didn't score well. What about Tropical Traditions coconut oil shampoos? We're using a similar product for our son right now and I'm thinking of switching over to that once we run out of the Desert Essence. I haven't checked out the EWG ratings, but it's made from 100% organic coconut oil.

For moisturizer, I use Earth Science Almond-Aloe Moisturizer with SPF 15. I don't think that scores very well on EWG either, though.

For deodorant, I like Tom's of Maine.

  • I use Yes To Carrots Shampoo and Conditioner.  I really like them and they score a 2 on the EWG ratings.  When I haven't been running and gotten sweaty hair, I'll use Baking Soda/Apple Cider Vinegar.  They both work great and leave my hair clean and soft.

If you are open to it, I use coconut oil as a moisturizer.  It's completely safe and works great.

I also use coconut oil/baking soda and cornstarch to make my own deodorant.  I smells great and works better for me than any other deodorant I have tried.

Can you explain how you make this deodorant and what you store it in?

  • Shampoo and conditioner: we are currently using Trader Joe's Tea Tree Tingle shampoo and conditioner. It's rated 4, not great but it's a break from the no 'poo method that didn't work for me. Next I'm going to try the "sorta 'poo" method.

Moisturizer: I use Avalon Organics lavender daily moisturizer with 18 SPF, I like it. I also use coconut oil at night (SPF lotions at night actually harm your skin).

Deodorant: I'm still using Dove *gasp* I'm waiting until it's finished then I'm going to try Crystal. Too lazy to try to make my own, I have enough for now trying different no 'poo and oil cleansing method. HTH

This deodorant is really easy.  I just melt 5-6 Tablespoons of coconut oil in the microwave, mix in 1/4 cup baking soda and 1/4 cup cornstarch.  I let it cool for a few minutes then pour it into an empty deodorant container.  I put it into the fridge until it is solid then keep it in the bathroom.  It will twist up just like regular stick deodorant.  I know some people add a few drops of essential oil as well, but I don't find it necessary and I like the smell of coconut.

This is exactly what I do.  Though for face moisturizer I will use shea butter or olive oil instead.  I find coconut makes my oily skin feel oilier, but I love it for an all over body moisturizer.

For the deodorant I usually just take a dab of coconut oil and a sprinkle of baking soda in the palm of my hand, rub together then rub under each arm.  I'd like to get a separate container and mix some up that's ready to go, but this works just fine for me.

Love No Poo... baking soda followed by apple cider vinegar rinse with a few drops of rosemary essential oil.  Occasionally I'll still crave some lather.  We make our own cold process soaps so I'll use one of our shampoo bars for that, and that's mostly composed of coconut oil as well.

Thank you!  Going to try it this weekend!
