Bikram Yoga??

Does anyone do Bikram Yoga? If so did you give it up for the first tri? I'm asking bc my OB doesn't know what it is and can't recommend it or not to tell me if I can start it again.

Re: Bikram Yoga??

  • I wouldn't.  From what I can gather, it's not safe for you body temp to rise much higher than normal.  A lot of doctors will restrict hot baths/showers for this reason.

  • I've heard there are women who do it during their pregnancy, but most doctors will not recommend it... apparently it's difficult to find a doctor that will approve it.

  • My doctor specifically banned it for the whole pregnancy because it raises your body temp.

  • My cousin maintained her practice throughout her entire pregnancy with her most recent two babies (one is now 5, the other is about 7 months). However, she was also an instructor and had been practicing for several years, so I think if you have a very strong practice, you can maintain it, but she did have to modify several poses.

This. I attended hot yoga (when I used to go) with several pregnant women but they were obviously strong practitioners and had been doing it for some time. There are lots of other yoga classes you can still do though, just stay away from ones where they heat the room.

As my cousin got a lot bigger, and it was harder for her to get into town (she lives in a small town in Montana, so a drive to the studio was over 30 mins away), she would heat a small room in her house and do her practice in there. It would obviously never get to the 105*-110* that Bikram is famous for, but the heat is always good for keeping your muscles loose. You could always try something like that, if you are comfortable.

  • NO NO NO NO NO

I used to do it all the time. Unless you're super used to it then no no no

It's hard enough to do while in good shape and not pregnant.
