FTM Question: pumping during a bottle feeding?

I have been EBF so far. However, DH and I were talking about trying DD on one bottle per night, so he can do one feeding. If we do this, do I need to get up and pump at this time as well, to maintain supply? Or would I be ok skipping it?

If I do need to pump, how long would you suggest pumping? DD normally eats for around 20 minutes or so each time she nurses.

Re: FTM Question: pumping during a bottle feeding?

  • yes you must pump or feed each time the baby eats or you are basically telling your body that your baby doesn't need to eat then.  I highly encourage you to wait until your milk supply is fully established (4-6 weeks minimum) before doing this. pumping is not the same as nursing, babies are more efficient than a breast pump.

I know husbands like to do feeding, but I found pumping just to get husband feeding time much more hassle(for me) than it was worth, there are so many other opportunities that your dh has to bond (mine did bathtime from 0-1.5 years),  I let nursing be my time with baby.

  • Thanks! I'll just stick with it for a few more weeks until my supply is regulated :)
