Miscarriage/Pregnancy Loss

How do I know if natural m/c is complete? (I'm sure TMI...)

I've been lurking here a few times, and it has really helped me to cope with the whole situation.  Here's my quick intro: blighted ovum, stopped growing @ 6w0d, would have been appx 11w today, waited to miscarry naturally, and it finally started last night...

My "episode" lasted for about 4 hours, but sort of ended after passing what seemed to be like some kind of a tissue.  The bleeding subsided considerably to almost like spotting in the following 12hours, and thought everything was finished.

Then, I had another similar episode this afternoon again.  It lasted for about an hour this time, but also passed this same tissue like material toward the end.  I was bleeding more like regular period for several hrs, but now it has subsided again to spotting.

For those who have experienced natural miscarriages, did these episodes occur multiple times?  Did you need to have a surgery after having m/c'd naturally?  How did you know it was over?

I'm scheduled to have my hcg checked next week, and maybe I just need to have an u/s to really know.  But I thought I'd ask and see if anybody has experienced something similar.

  • I've been having waves of bleeding as well - I bled quite a bit on Monday morning, then not again until Wednesday morning, then Thursday afternoon some more. In between I have a very light flow. I think it's normal.

As to whether you know if you passed everything, my OB yesterday said that she would check my hcg again next week (this past Monday they were 3500 and Wednesday 600, so they're dropping well so far). She said as long as my levels are below 300 next Tuesday, then she won't even check me again. If they're above 300, then I'll need another blood draw a week or so later. She said that if tissue is retained (meaning I would need a D&C), then my levels wouldn't keep dropping. I also bought some more HPTs so I can monitor myself at home for when they get back down to 0.

  •  I had about three episodes like yours. The first I had cramping and bleeding with clots for about 4 hours and then it all went away. The second one a few days later, i ended up in the ER because i had stuck tissue in my cervix (ended up being the baby) and i was bleeding uncontrolably. I figured that it was over and a few days later went back to work. Without any kind of cramping or warning at all, i passed more tissue at work.  Went two weeks, had a follow up ultrasound and I still had tissue i hadn't passed. So, even though i had passed the baby three weeks before, I had to have a D&C to removed a stubborn piece of placenta. So, you never know how its going to go. I thought, it would be a few uncomfortable days and that would be that. But it ended up being a month long process. Its soo different for everyone....

  • Thanks so much for sharing your stories, and I'm so sorry about your losses.  But it makes me feel less alone to know that you've been there, and some going through right now.  It was also comforting to know that some of you had more than one episodes, and that it's not a compete abnorm!

  • I had 2 episodes.  They told me in the ER that as long as I didn't have a fever or unbearable pain not to worry.

So sorry you're going through this.

  • I had one significant episode that I thought was it. When I got checked 2 days later, my OB found I had not passed all tissue. She gave me cytotec. I need 4 doses before it worked and I had another episode, which passed the rest of the tissue.

  • I miscarried naturally and the steady, 'heavy' stuff lasted for 4 days but I saw the tissue pass the first night and also had significant pain that required prescription meds to bear. I had an ultrasound the day the MC started that confirmed my baby was still alive at the time and an ultrasound on day 4 that confirmed it was gone and the miscarriage was progressing as it should. After the tissue and heavy clots passed, it was more like a period and after that, more intermittent like you described but by then it was pretty light.  It stopped completely around 3 weeks after the first ultrasound and I had a negative home pregnancy test (midwife said I could take them for up to 6 weeks after as an alternative to coming in for tests as long as one read negative by then) and my period started today, 2 days shy of a month after.  Sounds like you may be through the worst of it but don't be surprised if there's still some left to pass.

So sorry for your loss!  It will get better with time.  I'm still sad but once you are through the physical part, the emotional part gets much easier to deal with.
