Husband had a T.I.A. last week

Wondering if anyone else has had experience with this in their families, or themselves. DH is 32, woke up to turn off the alarm last week, and said he felt funny, that his left side was numb. I could hear panic and slurring in his voice and asked if he thought he was having a stroke-he said yes and we called an ambulance immediately. The whole thing was over very quickly-probably less than a minute. He did not have any damage, thank god, and regained normal speech and most feeling in his left side before the ambulance arrived.

In the ER, they did a Cat scan and later an MRI/ MRA and echocardiogram, and could find no reason for the T.I.A. (mini stroke) . All in all he was in the hospital for almost 3 days, and the best guess now is that he has a blood clotting disorder, because none of the tests turned up any reason for the T.I.A.-and because he is so young and in good health, they did every test in the book. When he had his MRI, however, they did find a tiny area of damage in the brain that suggested he had had a small stroke previously-like, years previously, or maybe even since birth. No real answers.

I am so scared that this will keep happening, or worse. Docs put DH on daily aspirin, and blood thinning medication and something to lower his cholesterol (cholesterol was in the high-normal range, not dangerous but a little elevated).

He has none of the risk factors for stroke, except being a little overweight (not too much). Not a smoker, not a heavy drinker at all, no blockages anywhere. Even so, we are making changes to our lifestyle- less pizza and dinners out, more fruits and veggies, less wine with dinner (weekends only, now), more consistent exercise-in the past, DH has gone through periods of really great exercise, 4-5 times a week, lost like 30 pounds and then lost motivation and stopped. He is committed to being much more healthy now.

I am just so anxious since this happened. We were both mildly stressed out before, as we are both looking for new jobs (DH has a decent job but he's been increasingly frustrated at work, I am a part-time teacher looking for full-time work that will allow me to pay my student loans!!) but now I'm just terrified-when I'm not worrying about our finances I'm worrying about my husband's health. Our DS is 7 months old and I want to be able to rest easily knowing that his dad is not in danger of a major stroke.

DH is back at work now and you would never know anything happened, but my anxiety is through the roof. What can I do?

  • Wow - how scary!  I think it's normal to feel worried and panicked after this.  I think you're on the right path regarding exercise, cutting the risks.  Keep regular blood work and check ups for both of you.  Also - Maybe start shopping around for life insurance just in case or thinking about getting wills done.  I don't mean to sound morbid.  This is what I would be thinking about.

  • I've had 2 major strokes.  I was 22 when it happened.  I was a normal healthy weight, vegetarian and I ran, played soccer, basketball, martial arts, swimming.  I was very fit and active and healthy.

Strokes can happen to anyone and it doesn't only happen to unhealthy people or the elderly.  There was a 4 month old baby with one at the hospital when I had mine.  There are many different reasons one can occur.  They never figured out exactly what caused mine but their best guess is a flap between the atria of my heart that didn't close completely at birth.  I am on blood thinners for the rest of my life.  Unfortunately I have lasting effects and I can't be as active as I was before the strokes.

I am glad that your husband is ok and that he didn't get side effects, that was very devastating to me and I wouldn't wish it on anyone.  Is he going on medication?  Hopefully this doesn't happen again for him.  Lifestyle changes can make you feel better and are good anyway so if that is helping with you fear great!  I don't want to scare you but I was very healthy and it still happened.  The best we can do is go on enjoying life.
