Up until now, my work has been surprisingly very supportive of me during this time. My DH's grandmother passed away last week. He wasn't very close to her as she lived in Florida most of his life until recently. There was a small showing last weekend before she was cremated. Next Thursday his family is going to have a service/celebration at 6pm. Yes, the service is local and in theory I don't need to take any time off of work to attend the service, however, looking at my HR policy I'm entitled to 3 days bereavement. Since I'm entitled, I figured I'd take it. I asked my boss and my HR rep if I could have next Wednesday, Thursday and Friday off per the policy. I was told no - that the policy only applies if you need to go out of town. I finally just said "forget it." Am I in the wrong for even asking for this time off? I'm just a little peeved that I was denied bereavement for my DH's grandmother even though our policy states spouse's grandparents count. Sorry, just needed to vent.

Heaven got another angel the night you left this world behind
Heaven got a little better the day it took you away from me
Missing you tonight, see you again sometime
For now I'll close my eyes and dream of heaven tonight
I'll love you forever
I'll like you for always
Now and Forever

Re: Ok, so I'm kinda peeved (not totally loss related)
First of all, I am so very sorry for the loss of your DH's grandmother. As for work, I personally think that is complete crap. I understand that every company has their own policies, but I have never heard that in order to take bereavement leave you have to go out of town. Bereavement leave isn't just about the travel that might be involved but more about spending time with family and being there for eachother. I'm sorry work is being rude about this and if I were you I absolutely would have asked for the leave as well.
exactly this! Sorry you're dealing with this
I think that is crap. Do you have a copy of your handbook that you can review?
When the baby died they gave me 5 days bereavement. We didn't go anywhere, so would that rule still apply? That seems like a bunch of b.s.
