Any Army MP?

My cousin is thinking of getting married and her b/f is about to be in school to be an MP since we're USMC and not MP I was wondering if anyone could give me any info? Do they go to the field a lot? I'm assuming they usually deploy a lot too? Any info would be great because she really has no clue what she's getting into!! Also so far they're saying he is probably going to Hawaii how the base, housing etc? Thanks !

1. If he is only about to start MP school, there is no way he knows where he's going. In MP school, you don't find out your first duty station until 2-3 weeks before grad.

2. There are a few different types of MP units. A) Garrison MP ~ Your basic cop. They usually work 12 hour shift patroling the base or working the gate. They also do some field work and a lot of weapons training. Field MP ~ (that's what I was up until about a year ago) We did a lot of Infantry type training on top of training to work with detainees, hand to hand training, weapons training, a ton of field work and more. C) There are units that combine the two. Their primary job is Garrison work but they train for feild work.

There are also units that have small teams who train as SRT Teams (think SWAT) or Personal Security Detail teams (I did this as well).

3. Yes, they deploy a lot, as of now. Who knows what it will be like soon.

Honestly, all of this depends on what type of unit he goes to. Also, we cross train as prison guards and can be used as such for any deployment.

How far along into training is he? How do they know this info?

Did he get Hawaii written into his contract? If he does go to Hawaii it will be a lot of field time and deployments since the 25th infantry division is the command there.

I deployed as an MP with the Army National Guard. I did everything from manning radios in our operations center to searches, seizures, VIP escort and route clearance. I love my job and although it's getting to be more paperwork now that I'm gaining rank, it's still fun to get out and train combatives or riot control with my Soldiers. With MP, you either love it or hate it. I went on and am now pursuing my degree in law enforcement and have worked as an analyst on the civilian side and my experience helped me be great at my job. Even without my degree I've had job offers for supervisor level security jobs but I'm currently trying to finish my degree so I can specify which direction I want to go.

I honestly don't know, he might already be in his school (I don't know what the Army calls it sorry) When we spoke last it was about a month ago but I spoke to her mother today and she didn't say exactly what he was doing right now. All I know is he graduated basic already.

I don't know if its in his contract. We just started talking regularly because she was interested in knowing about the military life. She's young and doesn't really know much about the military so I've been trying to help her out. I have a few Army friends but I'm not super close to them so I don't wanna pick their brains lol

For MPs, we do it all in one place with one set of cadre. If he's already finished his Basic portion, he's into his MP training. He probably has temp orders on his AKO. However, those can change at any time. I wouldn't be getting set on Hawaii if I were her. I've seen those orders change with in days of grad. One of my friends went from orders to Colorado to orders to Korea 5 days before grad.

If he gets Hawaii, more than likely, he'll be in a garrison unit.

Yea I understand that, which makes it more worse lol. I personally hate not knowing things but it comes with the lifestyle!! Anyways thank you and I will keep you in mind in case there are any more questions.

Only word of caution would be unless it is written into the contract don't get your or in this case her heart set on a location like Hawaii. We knew a lot of people that were going to Hawaii, Germany, Italy you name it and ended up in Montana, Missouri, North Dakota. Just the nature of the beast

That's what everyone is telling her!!!! She won't listen though. I guess that's why we're related lol I got married at 20 and didn't listen to anything anyone told me! We'll see what happens I guess.

She doesn't have to marry him to move to be near him. Tell her to get her own place and he can live in the barraks. They can continue to date. Don't get married.

She doesn't have to marry him to move to be near him. Tell her to get her own place and he can live in the barraks. They can continue to date. Don't get married.

She's going to try and go to college and dorm there. She def. cannot afford her own place. I think her best bet would be to go to school there but she can't really apply till she knows where he'll be for sure. I got married at 20 and felt that was so young, at least I had the 2 extra years to experience being out of H.S lol
