side-lying breastfeeding-is it safe if I fall asleep?

i've google the heck outta this and don't find many opinions saying it's unsafe... is it safe to breastfeed in bed with baby if i fall asleep??? i know not to have pillows, blankets, baby in between husband & i, etc, but if i follow all the rules, is it safe for MOM to fall asleep while feeding baby this way?

any opinions would be greatly appreciated, i'm terribly sleep deprived!!!

Re: side-lying breastfeeding-is it safe if I fall asleep?

  • I'm getting flamed but I do, I feed her this way when DH gets up for work at 7:00am and he brings her to me, I breastfeed in bed, we sleep together until I get up at 8:00 to get my day started.  She unlatches when she's done and I would easily wake up if she was coughing.

  • I hope you don't get flamed.  I think it's perfectly natural and probably way more people are doing this or co-sleeping at least sometimes than admit it.  In most cultures outside ours, babies co-sleep.

  • I do it. I've done it with all three kids. Like PP said, moms have been doing it since the beginning of time. The powers that be say it is never safe, but statistically, it isn't safe to have kids riding in cars. As with everything, you have to weigh safety against practicality.

  • I've been doing it...even as much as I hate to admit, but it is the only way I get some sleep.  I'm not telling anyone I know in person though, lol!

  • No, it's not safe. I am a huge advocate of not co-sleeping.  This is because I have a friend who's 2 month old died of SIDS (suffocation probably from co-sleeping). Yes, we all want sleep, but it only takes one time.  I also think co-sleeping is one thing, but to fall asleep breastfeeding is extremely unsafe because your breast tissue could press up against her face or you could roll on her or into her making it hard for her to breath.  I just think.. take 30 minutes to breastfeed safely and then put your baby back to sleep safely.

Suffocation from co-sleeping, is not SIDS. I've lost two cousins to SIDS.

This. And CJ is really really conservative. If I remember correctly from another board she does not agree with letting your baby sleep in a rnp either.
