Babies: 0 - 3 Months

What?s the best baby carrier?

I?m torn between two types of baby carriers. One is the Molby Wrap (the kind that crosses behind your back and the baby is upright) and the other is the ?peanut shell? sling type (where baby is lying down).

Do you have a preference to either?

Re: What?s the best baby carrier?

  • I haven't tried either. I bought a cheapy one from Walmart, mostly bc I didn't see myself baby wearing much and didn't want to spend $$$ on a carrier. Turns out, I <3 baby wearing, Aria loves being "worn", and the cheapy carrier is super comfy! I think it was just $15. The brand is evenflo.

  • I love my Ergo but hate the infant insert..... gets to hot. So for now I have a boba wrap & LOVE it!! It is more stretchy than the moby.

  • ergo.

I loooove carriers. I also have a Bjorn, Moby, Hotsling and a frame backpack.  My son liked them all, but with dd I invested in the ergo and I doubt I'll ever use any of the others again. IT is amazing. I can wear her for hours and never get sore and she loves it.

  • The Moby uses your whole back and shoulders evenly to carry the babys weight, so it's super-comfy for extended periods of time. I used it up until recently, we just got a mei tai for our over 25-pounder. The sling will be quick on and off (but the Moby is really easy once you get the hang of it!), but all the weight will be on one shoulder, and it just doesn't feel as secure to me, I always felt like I had to have one hand supporting DD when she was in a sling. So I'd def go with a Moby. I've heard great things about Ergos, too, but never used one. As long as it's not a crotch-dangler Bjorn/Snugli type, you're good to go.
  • I have a K'tan which is like a Moby but less wrapping woot! She likes it sometimes. I have a Beco carrier coming tomorrow which is similar to a Ergo but you can front carry facing in and out, hip carry and back carry. I'm excited to try it out!

I haven't had my baby yet but went to a class about baby wearing. you should never baby wear with the baby lying down. She said for the first couple months the baby needs to be laying against your chest and legs must be in tadpole position. If the legs aren't tadpole then there is high risk for hip problems etc.

  • I use the Moby everyday. He loves it. He can be the fussiest baby ever and one minute in it and he out like a light for over an hour. We have the Ergo for when he gets bigger and I am going to make my own ring sling (like the Maya).

  • I live my Moby!  So does DD.  We use it all the time and it is great.  I saw Babies R Us has them now in store and puts them on sale for $35 from time to time.  Target also has them in store now.

I plan on getting the Beco Gemini for my next carrier. For when DD is bigger.

  • My vote is for Baby Bjorn... I have the Moby as well, but the baby bjorn just feels more secure/safe to me.  No matter how I position LO or how tight I get the Moby wrapped, she just seems to slip downward on my chest, out of the "close enough to kiss" zone.  Also, with the Baby Bjorn, I don't have to worry about the angle of her neck, which is a big relief.

  • Oh - and everytyhing I've read says to avoid the peanut shell typed carriers where LO is lying down.  They can get their chins pushed toward their chests and stuck that way and suffocate.

  • Both DS and I love our baby K'tan!

  • I don't like either of those, but I love my ring sling.

  • The Moby Wrap works best for us so far. DS often falls asleep in it and it's also comfortable for DH and I. We have the Ergo, too, but will probably wait a few more weeks to use it.

  • Hi,

I just recently took a 3 day babywearing class. There is quite a bit of information out there and not all of it accurate.  1st, I would shy away from the slings mentioned in your question, as this type of sling has been attributed to infant fatalities-see accc.gov.au or https://www.productsafety.gov.au/content/index.phtml/itemId/989114. 2nd, if you choose to wear your baby on your back make sure he/she can hold his/her head up and is developmentally ready. The most important features in a carrier are that is comfortable and flexible. A really good soft structured carrier is the Manduca (manduca.com.au). It is all organic materials and non-toxic safety clips and straps. With its built-in infant insert, extra-padded and comfy belt which expand up to 140cm, cushioned, adjustable and convertible straps and options for 3 carrying positions (front, back, hip/side carry), the fully machine washable Manduca baby carrier is the most secure and easy to use soft structured carrier on the market. This carrier is made for your baby to naturally sit in the deep ?M? position, which is essential to bub?s hip and spine development. The Manduca website can give you some great information on babywearing. Whatever carrier you choose, ensure that the baby is sitting in it properly?fabric extends from knee to knee on baby, make sure there is plenty of ventilation and it is not too hot for baby or carer, baby?s knees should be at a 45 degree angle with baby?s knees at baby?s belly button height and baby sitting in a deep seat?deep M position. Baby carrier or sling should evenly distribute weight all over shoulders, back and hips of the carer. Babies should not face forward in carriers, as it is over- stimulating for baby and not the correct position for spine and hip placement. Good luck!

  • My DH and I went around trying out ALL kinds of carriers, and we both decided the Beco Gemini was our favorite. We got one in Espresso, and LOVE it. Of course we are first time parents so we haven't tried it with an actual baby, but the weighted dolls at babywearing shops are really good to test with! I'd recommend going to some babywearing shops (or even just baby stores, but look online to see which ones have the carriers you'd want to try). We also love the Baby K'Tan, that is like the Moby only with less fabric and faster/easier to use (in my opinion). We will be getting one of those as well.
