Genetic Testing for moms 34 and up

So, I am 34 now and will be 35 when the baby is born. They are recommending all kinds of testing and I'm not sure what insurance covers. I was just curious what others are planning to do as far as doing this testing or not and if they know what is covered by their insurance. I know it will vary based on insurance plans, but I'm just curious.

  • I am 40, will be 41 when I deliver this lo.  I was 38 when we had DS.  I was offered Integrated Pregnancy Screening which is a blood draw and nt u/s at around 12w, followed by a 2nd blood draw about 4w later.  Depending on those results, I can have an amnio if I choose to.  CVS isn't really done here because of a timing thing and due the the higher m/c risk than with amnio, I wouldn't do it anyway.

I know in the states there are two newer blood tests that can be done Materna21 and I can't remember the name of the other one.  I don't believe either are yet available in my area (Ontario, Canada).  I would consider the Materna21 if it was available here and covered by either my provincial or employer health benefits.

    THIS!

I'm 38 and I'm doing the Integrated screen (NT scan + 1st tri b/w + 2nd tri b/w).  If that comes back abnl, I'll probably get an amnio.  All these are covered by my insurance.  You should check your policy or call your ins to find out if they're covered.

I asked my OB about MaterniT21 and she doesn't seem too enthusiastic about it.  Amnio is 100% accurate, whereas materniT21 is 99%, so there's still a chance it can be wrong.  Also, MaterniT21 has only been around for a few months, so in reality, all the women who have undergone the tests have yet to deliver yet.  My ins doesn't cover MaterniT21.  I believe it's $2000 if you have no ins.  Even though my ins doesn't cover it, apparently the company that runs the test has some deal with the hospital/OB practice I go to, so if I were to do it, it'd cost me around $500 OOP.

  • I was 35 when DS was born and will be 38 when this one is born. We have not done any testing and don't plan on it. If there is any reason for concern after the anatomy scan, we will discuss testing options then.
