Flat spot:/

My daughter has had a bit of a flat spot right in the middle of the back of her head since she was born it seems. The dr said it looked fine at her 2 month check up. Now it seems to be a little deeper. She HATES tummy time, I've tried everything but can only get her to do 1-2 min without full on screaming. She likes her bumbo too, but not for very long.

Is this something I should be overly concerned about? She isn't constantly laying flat and even though she sleeps in an RNP and is STTN, I do notice she varies her head position. Not sure if there is much I can do until she's more mobile/sitting.

Re: Flat spot:/

  • I would just suggest laying her head to the right one night and then the left the other night (and keep repeating) to help to get rid of the flat spot. Maybe you can try playing with her and encouraging her when she's doing tummy time. Most babies hate it so don't worry.

  • My little guy has one on the right side. He always turned his head to the right for a long time. He even had issues tracking to the left.

I have made a conscious effort to prop him on his left side at night and nap time. I also try to put more interesting things on the left so he has to turn his head that way. His head is starting to round out more and the flat spot isn't as noticeable as it was even six weeks ago.

I think the more mobile he gets and the less time he spends on his back, the better it will get.

  • I just noticed a spot that seems to all the sudden be flat. He sleeps in a RnP too and i think ill flip it around so he turns his head the other way. I think they naturally turn it towards mama:) I am also going to ask daycare to stay aware of it.
  • My DD is the same way. Doesn't like tummy time (although the past few days have been better) and she also has a flat spot in the back of her head. The doc said it's perfectly fine. Nothing to worry about. It will all adjust. :)

  • I'm in the same boat :(

I just posted about this on the 3-6 months board, there are some good tips from other moms:
