Success after IF

s/o car seats and RFing

If you only have one, do you still have them rear facing and in the middle?

I am challenged with the constraints of my car (Jetta sedan) and my car seat (Britax Blvd).  DD is still in the infant seat, middle seat. She is only 21 lbs, 31 1/4 inches so she is going to out grow her infant seat very soon. We are not ready to get a new car and we own and can't return the Britax. We haven't spent much time trying to figure out where to place the convertible seat etc. But IF I have to FF her because the seat won't fit, is the middle still the safest? It seems weird to me since there is no seat in front of them to protect them.

Re: s/o car seats and RFing

  • We had Anna (pre-Harrison) RFing in our britax blvd behind the passenger seat. The shape of our back seat doesn't allow for a secure install in the middle position. She stayed that way until H came, then we RFing behind the driver, because I wanted Harrison curb-side.

Eta:  why are you worried you won't be able to get the blvd RFing?  I personally found that the infant seat took up more space than our RFing blvd in terms of how far forward the passenger seat had to be for it to fit.

    Because we're fancy like that.

  • read up on extended rear facing --- you can make it work in any car... and it's worth it.

all it took for me was to read the words "internal decapitation" to keep my boys rear facing until 2yo.

I used to be Goldie_locks_5 but the new nest is so screwed up that I was forced to start over.

  • We has my kids rf in a boulevard in dh's jetta with no problems.  Try it out.  It's doable :)

  • The Britx should work fine.  I have the same one, and it fits better behind my passanger seat than the infant seat did. The passaenger is not eating their knees as much. I have a Toyota Corolla.

TTC since May 2006. After 3 failed Clomid cycles, 2 failed Injectibles/IUIs, 2 failed IVFs and 1 failed FET, we moved on to adoption!

Last ditch FET resulted in BFP, and identical twin girls!

  • In my car (Saturn Ion sedan), Elizabeth's still RFing in the middle and she's nearly 3. In DH's truck (it has a full bench backseat), she RFs behind the passenger seat because car seats aren't allowed in the center due to how the bench seat splits.

Do you have some place that does car seat inspections? They'd be able to help determine how/if/where it would best fit RFing.

After 20 months, 3 Clomid cycles and 4 IUI cycles, IVF #1 with ICSI = BFP!

  • When it was just C, we had him on RF on the passenger side of my Volvo.  The middle seat didn't have latch and it was better for my husband to have full recline on the driver side when he drives.

I think the middle seat is *technically* the safest, but I was ok with moving him.  But really, he will be safe wherever you can get a proper install of the your seat.

  • We have ours installed RF behind the driver seat.  I had it installed at the fire department and they actually recommended that position because as a driver you are more inclined to "protect" your own side.  When I arrived at the FD the seat was installed in the middle and they moved it.  I honestly did not think it would fit behind the drivers seat because our infant seat (Britax Chaperone) only fit in the middle.  Might be worth checking with your local fire department...

  • It is safer to have the kid RFing in the outboard positions than FF in any of the seats.  Additionally, many convertible seats can be reclined at 35 degrees instead of 45 for older children who can support their head (infants need to be at 45 degrees to keep their heads from flopping forward and cutting off their airways).  Call the manufacturer or check your manual to be sure.

I definitely would try the RFing install in each position and see what works the best.  Hypothetically (because I'm sure it fits), I would absolutely buy a new carseat that fit in my car RFing instead of turning DD around before 2 years old.  $150-200 for a new seat is a small price to pay for hugely decreasing her risk of internal decapitation, death, and severe torso injuries.

Ditto...we are still rfing passed 3! Although I might have to turn her around soon.

I have wondered if its safer to put car seat behind a seat vs in the middle in forward facing ...good question..anyone have a good answer???

The safest position is wherever you can get the best installation every time.  In DH's Blazer, the middle seat (between the buckles) is too narrow to get a good installation with our seats (and the original manual says no carseat in the middle but was then clarified that you can have a carseat in the middle if you can get a secure installation).  If you can put her in either the middle or an outboard position with an equally tight installation, then I would pick either the middle or the passenger side (I think it is Howley that always points out that if you are parked on the street, loading from the passenger side is easier/safer).  In my car, if you use LATCH in the middle (my car has three sets of anchors), then you can't have anyone sitting behind the driver, so you lose two seats.  The seat installs best for me using LATCH on the passenger side, so that is what we use.  There is a slight advantage to the middle seat, but the outboard seats are safe as well.
