BFing moms-Vitamin D question

Did your pediatricians recommend that you give your baby Vitamin D drops? Ours does for all breastfed babies so I picked up a multivitamin drop for infants. We gave Emmy her first dosage yesterday and it did not go well. She spit up some of it and reeked of iron afteward. She had her first horrible night last night- hardly slept and was "off" the entire time and cried so much! It could be a coincidence but I think it was the vitamin drops that upset her stomach. Anyone else experience something similar?

Also, do you think if I continue taking my prenatal vitams (with Vitamin D) and take Vitamin D tablets myself that it will be enough to get to her? I really don't want to put her through that again today.

Re: BFing moms-Vitamin D question

  • My ped recommended them, but not until she's one month old... Now you have me nervous about them! Let us know how it works out!!

  • Yeah, those drops are awful stinky!  I mixed them with one of his bottles that he got at daycare from 3 months-6 months old.  After that, we started solids, so I put them in applesauce or oatmeal or something.  Some people I know had luck giving them during bath time, so if LO spit them up, they could be washed up right away.  Oh and they stain clothes terribly too!

As far as upsetting LO's tummy, that might be something to talk to your pedi about.  If you want, skip them today.  Missing one day (or even several) isn't going to hurt her.

  • Ours never did and I just made sure to take her outside for a little bit each day
i wish i could be joking but my dad is the music teacher at a church so he owuld be mad. we had sex, all the time how bad i know but we dont want to wait and he said GREAT OH KAY! and I was really feeling the wets? down there- too embarsed to say- but he acted like man.
  • I use (and did use) a vitamin D drop  for DD1 ans this LO wth no problems. I don't think we get enough for our own bodies so your LO probably won't get it through BFing, which is why they suggest supplementing. I would try a standalone vitamin D.
  • Hey Beener!!

Because of our LOVELY Midwest Springs with very little sun, I got the drops and Tatum LOVES them. The kind I got are by Enfamil, 10 bucks, they are "Di-Vi-Sol" and they smell like cherries! No iron smell whatsoever.  She sucks it right down. So cute to watch.  She also smacks her lips! LOL

My pediatrician told me that any Vitamin D that you take, for some reason, does NOT transfer to breastmilk, that's why a supplement is necessary.  Vitamin D is tricky because it's actually a hormone.  We've only missed one day so far.

    Hope this helps!!

This is what I was told too. We never did the drops with DD, though. We were given a trial bottle and just never remembered. They told me to do them this time too and I have yet to buy any. I guess the D alone is hard to find and they recommend the TriViSol.

  • Yikes! This is the first I've heard of Vitamin D drops. I must have missed this somewhere. I'll have to ask the ped at our next appointment on Tuesday. Thanks for bringing it up. I would have never known about it.

I'll have to try the Enfamil drops tomorrow. I'm also wondering if it was what I ate last night- we had califlower with dinner and that's on the list of culprits for causing gas in BF babies. Either way, I'm not giving her the Vitamin D drops we bought because of that nasty iron smell so I'm hoping the brand that works for Tatum works for Emmy too!

I'm so excited about your invites. You should PIP them! I'm waiting to get the newborn photos so I can do the birth announcement- I'm getting them from Tinyprints as well. Love it!

  • We have been giving Spencer one drop on my finger tip which he sucks off.  It has been fine and I don't see or smell any effects.

This is the kind we use as well.  I EP, so we just mix it in with one of his afternoon bottles.  I haven't had any problems!

  • Be very careful with any supplement that contains iron. It's VERY easy for infants to go toxic from an overdose. My pedi put us on poly vi sol w/o iron, but it still stinks (and stains).

  • Lilly gets vitamin D drops from enfamil. I pump 1 bottle per day & have DH feed it to her mixed in there. No problems so far.

  • my pedi wasn't concerned last time around and this time the pedi hasn't said any yet.

Can you do ones without iron in it? Also, DD2 will start a bottle in a few weeks when that happens I'll likely just put her probiotics and maybe vit D in there

  • My pedi din't mention it today at her 2 week checkup. We live in a very sunny area, so we just go outside for a bit every day.

  • Make sure you get Di-vi-sol or Tri-vi-sol.  The Poly-vi-sol is the one with iron and nasty.  The other ones are sweeter and should go over better.  I made that mistake with DS1!

Incorrect. Poly vi sol comes in two forms, with or without iron. My son takes the kind that does not have iron.

  • Awesome! Thank you ladies so much for the feedback. I'm going to switch to enfamil vitamin D only and hope that works. If not, we will start feeding her a bottle of BM a day with it mixed in.

  • I was just on the BF board and saw a recommend for Carlson vit D...just one drop apparently. 1 ml is a LOT for DD to handle, and she spit it out and gagged on the rest. going to try Carlson!
