Trying to Get Pregnant

Dr Shettles Method

Any one else heard of this supposed method?? I know people who swear by it? Anyone have it work or not work...I know its only a 50/50 chance, just want to hear your opinions.

    I figured as much.

To answer your question, no. I do not believe in the Shettles method, because you know what else is 50-50? Sex. Plain ol' doing it. So, no, I am not going to STOP having sex, the act that gets you pregnant (theoretically), during my FW in hopes of having a girl.

I would be THRILLED to have a child of either sex. It does not matter to me whether it has a penis or a vagina. I just want it to be healthy. That's all.

  • I don't believe it and think it's stupid...the nurses were joking about it when I was in L&D when I had my daugher b/c a couple was upset it didn't work for them.

DH and I have good friends who did it and swore up and down they were having a boy and there timing was perfect.  Well they now have a 1 yr old little girl and were in shock when they found out...they looked like a bunch of idiots after telling everyone they new they were having a boy :P

  • DH's mom had 3 boys, then 3 m/cs, then another boy. She swears to this day that the 3 m/cs were all girls "because of the timing." I haven't asked details, but I'm pretty sure she means Shettles. I have decided it is not worth the argument that is sure to come if I try to tell her that Shettles is by no means a 100% method. When I read the theory in TCOYF I thought it made sense, but it's certainly nothing that I'm going to use to plan our next child. My method is to have sex as often as possible around O and hope it works.

  • I know a few people who have multiple children, and they swear by it. Just kind of hard to believe.

  • In theory, it might work.  I'm definitely not trying it though.  I just want a baby and don't want to hurt my chances by not having sex so I can try and pick whether it's a boy or girl.

  • I was *just* reading about this in my new favorite book, The Impatient Woman's Guide to Getting Pregnant (https://www.impatientwoman.com -- sorry, can't get the link-thing to work). I'm loving it -- both funny and informative.

There's a chapter in there on choosing the sex of your baby that reviews all of the scientific studies on "at-home" techniques. It says a lot of studies find close to 50/50, but the best ones actually find that the timing OPPOSITE to Shettles' suggestions works. Shettles says sex close to ovulation for a boy and far away for a girl, but close to ovulation for a girl and far away for a boy is what the actual studies show (the best known of these is often referenced online as the New Zealand study).

Funny, too, because that's exactly what happened for me. Both of my girls were close to ovulation babies. We'd like a boy next, but I'm afraid that the far from ovulation timing will mean I won't get pregnant at all, so not sure I'll try it. Might try some of the diet and supplement suggestions for a boy she gives in the book. And will definitely try the overall diet suggestions for getting pregnant, period.

Here's the sad/angry-making part -- Shettles' book has sold something like a million and a half copies! And it's wrong!

    I agree 100% w/ this.

    Me too.

  • If this truly worked, women who undergo trigger and IUI procedures would have a majority of male babies. You are triggered and IUI is timed to hit almost precisely when you are ovulating, give or take a few hours. The washed sperm only live around 6 hours.

At last check, babies conceived using ART have a male/female birth ratio nearly identical to that of the non-ART population.

One of the lesbian conception/pregnancy books says that lesbians tend to have boys for this reason (because they are usually conceiving via IUI timed to be close to ovulation).  Except there are plenty of girl babies on the LGBT Parenting board...and I know plenty of other lesbians with girls.

I've never counted, but I trust your stats.

Which is good because we don't have any boy names!

    Yep Yes

  • I know people who swear by it but they are also people who seem to get pregnant right away. For example, one friend wanting a girl told me that she had sex several times and then a couple of days before ovulation she stopped. I was thinking of trying the method but when I realized that I was not getting pregnant right away I was unwilling to let any fertile days pass me by!

Shettles is stupid, but it isn't bullsh*t.  If done properly it can increase your chances of having the preferred sex of baby, but it's by no means a guarantee.  Just a way to change the odds a little.

Not true. The opposite timing actually works better when it's been studied (Shettles never did a study). See, e.g.,:
