Do all cribs convert to toddler beds?

I'm sure this is a dumb question, but I can't find the info online, so here it is.

I know that certain cribs are sold that convert into "big" beds (full, I assume).  Ours is not such a crib.

But do all cribs at least have the ability to remove a side and use as a toddler bed?

Our cribs are several years old (purchased when I was pg with our twins) - just very cheap basic ones from JCP.  They are drop-side, I believe, but we have that side against a wall so it's never been used.

I've looked online to find similar ones and don't see the info I'm looking for.  I'm sure I can ask DH to work on it/ try to take it apart, etc., but he's not going to be thrilled at the idea when we don't know what the outcome will be :)  Perhaps I should just assume not, and go shopping for a twin-sized mattress instead. . .

Nope, not all convert.  To convert a crib to a toddler bed (at least with ours), you remove a side and then put a rail on the side in its place (A rail as in a long piece of wood, not necessarily a bed rail to keep someone from falling out).  For our Ikea crib, the crib came with the extra piece, but with many cribs you have to buy that seperately.

    Perfect, thanks!

  • I've also noticed that some convert by simply removing the whole side while others have a partial rail..... so there are different ways they convert.

  • What CandT said, ours the front came off and viola, toddler bed.  If we wanted a bed rail (we did) we had to buy it separately.  So I think it's worth a try to see if the crib is "finished" when you take the front off.

  • Like the others, we just took the front off of the crib and that was what we used as a toddler bed. We didnt have the side rails from the crib company (we must have lost them when we moved), so I bought a toddler sized guard rail at One Step Ahead.
