Anyone else NOT buying maternity swimwear?

Please feel free to flame me but I really wasn't planning on buying maternity swimwear.  Am I nuts?  I was just going to rock my regular old bikinis.  (I should add I am NOT model thin.  I'm 5'9 and a size 6).

For those that are buying them - why are you buying them?  For those who weren't planning on it - why not?  I figure I'm going to have to buy a whole new wardrobe as it is, I was going to try to save a little $ buy wearing pre-preg swimwear & under garments ...

Re: Anyone else NOT buying maternity swimwear?

  • I never bought pg swimwear with DS and I don't plan on it this time around.  I have a few bikinis and a couple of tankinis.  I don't honestly beach or pool it much, so there is really no need.  I'll just make what I have work.

  • I hadnt planned on it. I dont go to the pool often (my parents have one) but I usually just wore an old swim suit or my bikini (if no one was around--size 10, but who cares).

However as I am typing this I realize we will be going to my SILs who lives on a lake and doing all that frequently this summer. So, I might just get a maternity tankini top or wear a mat tank top over my bikini.

  • I don't think I will be brave enough to sport a swimsuit this summer!

I'm not buying one. I plan on wearing the tankini's that already own. They worked well when I was pregnant with DD. As long as I don't have an enormous belly this time around, I should be okay. Same with panties, I didn't buy special ones last time and I don't plan on doing it now.

  • I'm not. I planned on wearing my regular bikinis. Given the bottoms still fit. Last pregnancy I had to buy new underwear because my butt got so big lol.

  • I didn't want to, but I don't do the bikini thing, so I don't have a choice it seems.  My current swimsuits are just not cutting it due to the newfound boobage.  I'm little though (size 2), so I'm hoping they're stretchy enough I can just buy a larger size.

Or I may just live on the edge and buy a two piece! Embarrassed

  • I don't see myself buying one either.  I will probably just use an old bikini and let it all hang out... at least I'll have a reason why it doesn't look awesome this summer :)

Very true.  Plus I live in Connecticut so no matter what I do, I will not be the worst looking thing on the beach or by the pool.  LOL

  • I may or may not.  I didn't with my last pregnancy.  We have a week long beach trip planned mid-September this year, so I may buy a maternity tankini depending on how my body looks then (I'll be 7 weeks away from my due date).  I may also buy the maternity tankini to cover up my stomach from being out in the sun for a week straight.  Your skin is more sensitive to the sun while pregnant and I think it would be easier to have my belly covered rather than having to put sun block on it 5xday.

  • You guys... My boobs don't fit into my pre-pregnancy bras, much less my halter top bikini tops. I need SUPPORT. Like, gimme an underwire, some padding, and like a holster or something. I'll be buying something new to hold these bullet-boobs up.

In other news, as least I'll travel with my own flotation devices this summer.

  • I was thinking about it, since I'm going to Hawaii in late June, but now that I think about it, there's no reason I can't wear a regular suit I already have.  Thanks for the input ladies!

  • I bought a tankini in non-maternity, just a size bigger.  I'm a small, fit person (5'6", 125lbs) and this is my first pregnancy, so I have no idea what to expect!  I probably wouldn't have and just stuck with my bikini, but I'm going to Aruba for a wedding in July, and I don't want to scare anyone!!

  • Would love to not have to buy a new swimsuit.  But I know there's no way I'm going to fit in my old ones, especially by the time August comes around.  I know the tops will be indecent already, and I'm sure I'd be horrified if I put the bottoms on.

  • I honestly haven't even thought about it. I love my bikinis, so maybe I'll just see how long I can pull that off. I got to Vegas in June. I guess I'll just see what I look like by then. If I'm still just looking fat and not pregnant, I may not put on a swimsuit!

  • Im not planning on buying a "maternity" suit. I have a few bikini's that will work but I also thought I might buy a one-peice with the cut out sides just to have the coverage over my stomach. haven't really thought a whole lot about it. We are big beach/pool/lake people and spend most of the warm days there.

  • I live in Florida and there is no way I will be able to get through July and August without going to the pool or beach. I had large breasts to begin with but they have already grown so mcuh that they don't fit in my current bikini. I will definitely be buying a new one.
  • I'm not, and I didn't with DD either. With that pregnancy I wore a bikini with a larger top the whole time. I will do the same this time, as I won't be nearly as big as I was during bathing suit season last time.

  • The problem with pre-pregnancy bikinis is that they don't sit right on the bottom and tend not to be made for a pregnant woman's growing bust.

This is the maternity swimwear I used during my pregnancy. The waistband comes up higher which is what you need to keep you from looking like your bikini bottom is missing. It's also a lot more comfortable. It certainly had better bra support than my regular bikini and I'm a 36D.

  • I'm buying a maternity bathing suit.  We have a pool in our backyard and I usually swim in it several times a week - I imagine if I'm huge and hot and miserable come august it will be nice to have a suit with the right support and bottoms that don't drive me crazy.

  • Good luck! You don't stay the same size pregnant. I don't just mean adding a little weight. I mean spreading hips. Never mind the huge boobie problem. ;)

  • I wore my old bathing suit last year when I was pregnant with DS (he was born in July).  But the bottoms were tight (wider hips) and the top was way too small.  I did love rocking a bikini though!  I think I will probably buy a maternity suit though.  Apparently I love to be pregnant in summer so it might come in handy down the road.

  • I wore my pre pregnancy bikinis during my first pregnancy but this summer I'll be at the pool with my daughter several times a week and at swimming lessons so I'm going to invest in something a little more conservative this time around.

If I wasn't planning to spend so much time at the pool I'd probably just make do with suits I already have but my daughter LOVES the water so we're going to be at the pool a LOT.

  • I'm definitely rocking a bikini this year. I'll probably just buy bottoms a size bigger... My hips are definitely getting wider!

  • With my last pregnancy I just bought a skirted bikini bottom to go with the top I already had. I don't like the feeling of wet, floppy tankini fabric sticking to me, so I won't be going that route. My most recent pre-peg suit was a one piece with ruched sides that was actually a little too big to begin with, so I'll be rocking that until the belly outgrows it then it will be back to the bikini. I'm a size 12 pre-preg and I love my pregnancy curves! No need to hide the beautiful belly under a bunch of fabric.

  • We have a pool and I plan to be in it a lot this summer weather permitting so I want something that has good coverage and support especially since we are good friends with the neighbors who also have pools so it's normal for us all to be out by the pools on the weekend. My original plan was to get a new bikini just a size bigger but if I'm buying one anyways I may as well get a maternity one.
