total rookie - so sad

So I had a huge wonderful shower last weekend and got tons of stuff pretty much everything I needed. I thought that it would be a good idea to wash all the beautiful sleepers and blankets. I bought a special baby detergent and put in a load of laundry with over 40 adorable brand NAME sleepers. Well I put them in the dryer i guess on a heat to high and they all shrunk. I don't think i have ever cried so hard, i had to catch my breath. All the beautiful gifts ruined! I feel so horrible because I didn't buy these other ppl did and they probably wanted to see the baby in them. I was so prepared and the NB size look like barbie clothes and the 3months maybe fit a newborn but really i don't even know because i don't know her size nor have i ever dressed a baby.

Has this happened to anyone else? Im scared to ever dry anything for the baby ever again.

  • I washed then dried almost all of LO's clothes already and they were fine. I'm so sorry this happened to you. That really sucks! Do you have a new dryer? Mine is quite a few years old. I would probably just always dry LO's stuff on low from now on....

  • That sucks that they shrank so much.  Your dryer must be really high heat.  I dried everything on permanent press because it uses less heat (I have an old dryer that doesn't actually have a low heat setting!)  and I was worried about something like that happening.  Hopefully you can at least get some use out of the 3m stuff.

  • so sorry this happened!!!

we don't dry ANYTHING on med or high heat... everything gets done on low heat (except towels)

  • Oh no!  Is there any chance you can ask the store to swap them out for you?  If its truly "operator error" then I'm sure they wouldn't do it... but places like Nordstrom will exchange for ANY reason.  Just a thought, I'm so sorry that happened to you :(

Why didn't I think to tell you this??  THIS is a great idea!!!  Can you try to take back the clothes and tell them they are defective?  I've done it at Charlotte Russe two times.  I just take it in, plop it on the counter and say, "I wore this one time, washed it, and it shrunk to babydoll size. Help me!"  and both times they let me exchange it for a new one.

  • What setting did you use??? I've washed all my baby clothes probably 100s of times between my kids and never had anything shrink. I would write yo the company of the dryer and complain and read the washing instructions from now on.

  • I'm so sorry this happened to your gifts!

I've found that some of the name brands tend to shrink and warp more than others (Vitamins Baby and SpaSilk are two horrible ones). I wash and dry all of the infant clothes on cold/low heat, but some brands will get all wonky no matter what I do. I think it is great advice to see if you can take the clothes back for being defective.

    GL!

  • That sucks!!! Just hold on to it and see what fits when LO arrives. If you followed the wash instructions and it shrunk you could probably take it to the store to get a new one?

I washed all sleepers/swadlers on cold and then put on the line to dry... After they air dried, I put them in for a wrinkle release (all air/ not heat) to soften them up. The one piece of advice my mom gave me is to NEVER put baby clothes in the dryer!

  • I have always thought kids clothes shrink instantly. There just isn't enough fabric to dry or something.  Especially old navy, gap, and carters. I always buy my girls clothes a bit big for this very reason. I am sure she/he will fit into them they just look smaller than before. You could always exchange them.

  • That is a bummer, but I would try exchanging as well!  Good luck!

I'm also confused about the 40 sleepers...I have maybe 6 NB and 6 0-3mo to start with.

This happened to me too!! I put the clothes in the dryer on low heat and they still all shrunk (cold washing water too). I couldn't believe it. I even got some duplicate clothes after I washed them, same size and everything and I held the two up together and there was a significant difference. All of my 3 month sizes look like newborn. I'm hoping I'm just being unrealistic about how small they really are and baby will fit into them no problem. I hope the same goes for you.

  • Thanks everyone! Ya I probably over exaggerated. Some brands def are worse than others. Thanks for all your advice! I looked at newborn sizes today at carters and i still have quite a few that i can make work!

  • I wouldn't mind having 40 sleepers at all!! When we had DS#1 we lived in an apt and I could only get to the laundromat once a week. We definitely went through more than one outfit a day and he spent most of his time in footed sleepers anyway. I don't think you were wrong to wash them all. :)
