Cat mamas - FLUTD/Cystitis?

My poor boy kitty is sick :( He's been peeing/pooping outside the box some over hte last week, and we kept thinking it was a behavioral issue and kept trying to put him back in the box. This morning DH put him in his box and noticed he was trying to pee and couldn't :(

So DH took him to the vet, his kidneys are in good shape, no bacterial infection, and xrays showed no stones. So he just has some kind of urinary tract issue, and they gave him some kind of shot to hydrate him more, gave us a prescription for a different food, and told us to give him pain meds/slight sedation meds and keep him alone in a bathroom for a few days to make sure he totally empties his bladder and gets all cleaned out.

Poor guy :( Anyone have experience? She said stress could cause it, so I'm scared it's something we did!

Re: Cat mamas - FLUTD/Cystitis?

  • Poor kitty :-( I don't personally have experience with this but my mom, who is a magnet for stray cats (think cat whisperer, not cat lady from the Simpson's) has dealt with this. As soon as I read what you wrote about him not wanting to go in his litter box, I immediately though of urinary tract infection. One of my mom's cats did this because, according to the vet, the cat associates the litter box with pain, so they pee/poop near it and hope that by not going in the box, they won't in pain. She got some meds for him and in a few days, he was better. No lasting side effects! I don't think he was on a sedative, nor did she have to seclude him in another room, but do whatever your vet says. As for stress, I've never heard of this but I'm not a vet. It seems like you really love your kitty so I don't think its anything you did! I'm glad his kidneys look ok and hopefully he will be on the road to recovery soon!

  • Our poor boy kitty had/has crystals in his bladder. We had to put him on Science diet CD and haven't had much problem since then. This all happened ~ 3 years ago the DAY before we left out of town for a week. ::headdesk::

    Good luck!

This was my initial thought too. diet really helped with ours. it's actually pretty common in male cats.

  • Good to know diet made a difference for yalls kitties! We're switching him to Royal Canin Urinary SO (not sure how we're going to do this once he's out of seclusion since we have two kitties? Is it ok for his sister to eat it too? They're grazers so we leave food out all day - I know, I know!)

Sorry you're going through this.  It can be pretty common, esp in middle aged male cats.

The diet should help... it's something that isn't entirely clear in cause etc... there is a lot of speculation among veterinarians about it.

It's fine for her to eat it as well...  it will just be more expensive for you. ;)

    This!

I have the one who needs to be on that diet, and then a diabetic one that has to be on another diet. We seperate them at night/morning to feed and then let them out to play throughout the day. It helps that we have a big basement to keep one in during that time.

  • I dont' have any advice, but I just want to say (from one crazy cat mama to another) that I hope he feels better and it sounds like this is pretty common, so don't beat yourself up!
