July 2011 Moms

What phrases/words...

So the post below about pacifiers got me thinking....What phrases/words/nicknames do your inlaws use that just bug you?

For me its:

Ty Ty (for tired)
Nook-Nook (for pacifier)

And then FIL will say this "Oh he's smiling for Grandpa. He's got grandpa's smile!" ---Um he's smiling because he's a happy baby, he doesn't smile only for you and he certaintly does NOT have YOUR smile.

And my mom will go "where's my baby" ----I don't remember you pushing a 9# baby out in the past 9 months. Hmm

Re: What phrases/words...

  • Oh I could go on and on!

DH and I are not using any nicknamey words.  So like, a pig is a pig, not a piggy.  And a dog is not a doggie.  Horse is not a horsie.  Etc.

My MIL on the other hand....her entire speech falls apart and she sounds literally, dumb.  "Baby wanna put yer yammies on and go nigh-nigh?  GO NIGH-NIGH???  Baby wanna go nigh-nigh?!?!?!?"  Um, no...it's 3 in the afternoon, she's all set.

"Baby want some num-nums?" = Do you want something to eat?

"Kissy kissy for Yammie?" = May I please have a kiss.

We might see them today, I will have to pay better attention and write more down.  It is RIDICULOUS.

We are pick-our-battles people, so we haven't brought up the whole we-want-to-use-the-real-words-for-things yet, but we might have to, haha.

  • lmao. This is histarical because I think the same way.

My thing is I hate when people say. "here's your wa-wa" or "drink your ba-ba".  "that nan-na is yummy". I also hate it when someone has one daughter and they call her sissy.  Umm she is not a sister so why call her sissy? Confusing IMO.

In general, I would prefer my child being raised saying the proper terms for things.  Just MO.Wink
  • Well I have to say despite the fact that we use it and I am fine with it now, the chooch/paci thing bugged me at first. But it was whether that, or "suss" which is what my mom calls it, which annoys me even more.

My IL's don't really have any other saying or baby talk that they use, but what they do say that bugs me a TON is when they said "Don't look at mommy, look at grandma!" or "Oh, mommy just walked in, stop the world!" when he looks up at me. It has gotten to the point where I go in the other room and read a book when they skype so he won't look at me, and also, so I don't have to hear it.

Same here. I figure they aren't around him enough to do permanent damage.

  • MIL calls Gabe "Gabie" (long a sound like baby).  We specifically named him Gabriel so that they could say his name because we knew they wouldn't be able to pronounce Gabe.  But, alas, they are trying to say it.  (English is not their 1st language).

MIL also calls Gabe "my baby".  It makes me want to throat punch her.  I hate it.

  • When MIL sees DD she will say, "How is my little angel girl?" Many parts of this phrase bother me. 1.- she is NOT your girl; 2- I don't like the nickname "angel" for babies (she knows this & knows why it bothers me but still uses it); 3- she says it ALL the time

  • All baby talk drives me nuts. MIL was just visiting us for a week and said so many things I cringed at. Examples:

She would say "Want to go walkies?" I would say "Yes, she would love to go for a walk."

She would say "Saoirse want her ba-ba?" I would say "Yes, I think Saoirse wants her bottle."

Stuff like that annoys me. I know she can't speak yet, but she is learning language from us and I would love it if she heard proper words. I do not want my in-laws to enable my child to speak nonsense, but I will keep gently correcting them until they get the point. It's not worth a real sit-down discussion at this point, but I can see it coming in the future.

  • Oh, and it also drives me crazy that MIL sings all children's songs a different way than I do. Instead of "the itsy-bitsy spider" she sings "eensy-weensy spider." It just sounds stupid to me. She also sings twinkle-twinkle wrong, just a few words but it totally changes the meaning of the song. And don't even get me started on the wheels on the bus. I don't know what bus she is riding, but even the baby looks at her like she's nuts.

I don't think she is riding in a bus at all. I think she is taking the crazy train!

My ILs don't/haven't said any words differently... But my FIL calls dd "Shelly" for Michelle .... Then MIL says " that's what your grandpa will call you.. Your special name" or something like that. If I wanted DDs name to be Shelly I would have named her that . Super annoying.

  • They just refer to him as "the baaaaby".  Seriously I could count on one hand how many times they've actually referred to him by name.

  • MIL constantly talks in baby voices to DS which irritates the crap out of me.  She will say things like "Oh look, hes getting a toother, he keeps sucking on his fingies."  In a disgusting baby voice.

I also want to throat punch her.

  • I'm just happy that my MIL does talk to DD instead of making the noise she always made at my nephew when he was a baby. She would like... suck the back of her teeth to make the noise that I'VE always associated with somebody calling a cat. I told DH how much it drove me nuts, so he bugged her enough about it doing it to our nephew that she hasn't done it to DD.

I don't like that my own mom repeatedly calls DD a good girl for doing certain things. To me that implies that she's otherwise a bad girl. So it's a phrase that we just never say.

  • My FIL makes this sound when he's trying to get Zach to look at the camera for pictures that sounds like a live duck going through a meat tenderizer. It makes me crazy. And he can never do it just once. He does it over, and over, and over.

He also insists on singing the "poopy song" whether Zach has a dirty diaper or not. When DH told them we don't like to make a big deal of things like that, my MIL replied "you just like to pretend those things don't happen and sweep them under the rug?" No, we just don't like to sing about someone pooping their pants. Ugh.

  • Add me to the list of people with MILs who insist on non-stop baby talk and for some reason adds a lisp too?! It's grating to hear non-sense like "who'th gettin' a thoothum?!"

And she keeps trying to get him to say grandma. Ummmm lady he's 8.5m old, he's not going to say grandma for a while, give it a rest.  So after lots of baby talk its "Can you say Grandma.....Grandma.....Come on....Grandma...."

  • Boy oh boy did I pick the right thread to read lol. I got the whole 'hand that rocks the cradle' thing going on with my MIL too! Nice to know I'm not alone. She even has his pic in a frame that says my little man!! If he cries she goes oh he just misses his grandma. it drives me nuts! like um no he's crying cause he's sick.

How do you guys handle it?
