Cloth Diapering

Diaper Genie

I just talked to my daycare about cloth diapering this morning.  They are ok with it and just said obviously they won't dispose of poo and would require me to bring in a diaper genie to keep the diapers in after dirty.  I guess the bags aren't enough to keep odor away.  They also want me to disinfect every night.  I'm wondering if anyone else has to use a diaper genie at daycare and if it works out ok with CD.  I'm guessing the diapers/inserts will go in fine and then I would just take the blue plastic bag home, cut it open and throw them in my CD laundry.  Actually I'm wondering if the diaper genie isn't a bad idea for keeping dirties at home. Unless someone can point out something to me that I'm not thinking of, it would contain the smell better, wouldn't it?

Also, my daughter is enrolled in the Goddard School if anyone has experience with this daycare chain.  It's a corporate policy so it would be universal.  Thanks!

Re: Diaper Genie

  • I find a pail liner with a little baking soda and deoderizer works just fine for smell, although I am still in the newborn stage.

The diaper genie doesn't sound like a horrible idea if that's how you can manage CDs in DC, but I wouldn't do it at home just because of the cost. One 3 pack of the bag rings is like $17. I think that would add up quick.

My friend's daycare puts her diapers in a large clear plastic bin with a air tight lid,I think that would keep the smell at bay (you could add some deoderizer too) plus you could just wipe it down every night. Bonus would be no recurring cost, and no waste of plastic bags.

  • I would just send some plastic grocery bags with the wet bag for them to put the "stinkies" in.  My DS exploded a CD the other day and they just put it in a plastic bag and then in my wet bag.  Poop in CD's are not as stinky as poo in disposables I guess b/c of the chemicals that make up the disposables.

  • I would go for the Diaper champ over the diaper genie if they let you.  It can use grocery bags instead of inserts, and there is more room to place the diaper in.

I have a diaper genie from my sposie days, and I won't put my cloth in it.  I have a hanging wet bag and wash every day or 2, I have never had a smell issue.

  • Thanks ladies.  I do have a diaper genie at home that I got at a shower before DD2 was born.  It's now sitting in my house unused so I might try it for daycare just to not waste $$.  It does have a bit bigger opening than the one we had for DD1 but I don't know if it will work.  At home, I notice the pee smell more than anything.  I will have to try putting baking soda in the bag just to see if that helps in general.  I'm sure we will get this worked out.  I just think it's so odd that my daycare has never actually had a CD baby!
