words

Are your LOs saying any words yet? Mama? Dada? Indiscriminately or not?

DS says "mama" but he says it all the time and not always at me.  His pedi asked if he was saying "dada" or "baba" yet and he's not.  Is yours?

Re: words

  • She actually is. She does 'b', 'm'', 'd', 'th', 'k', and 'l' sounds. I think she knows mama is me because whenever she would say it I'd respond but everything else is just babble.

  • She started with the all day long "mama" about a month ago.

Now in the last week, she's finally made the connection that mama is me.

I think I heard "up" the other day, but I haven't heard it since so I'm pretty sure she has no idea what that means and it was just a fluke.

She does a sound that comes out like Hs first name...we laugh but I'm sure that's just coincedience at this point.

She does a ton of babbling. I don't keep track of sounds but it's quite a bit.

And a lot of screeching like a rabid monkey. She gets the biggest kick out of doing that. It was cute the first 400 times...now it makes me insane. ;)

LMAO - DS does that too! I jokingly said I think he is possessed because he likes to screech and then growl. Crazy baby.

He babbles a lot, there's mama and dada in there but typically not directed at us. I will ask him where's Dada and he gets really excited so I think he knows that Dada means H but he doesn't say it to H.

  • For a while now it's been sounding like DD says "Hi Da!" and usually it is directed to DH. She says Dada constantly, sometimes to him. Sometimes she says Mama to me. One night she was crying in the middle of the night and very clearly saying MAMA!!! because DH was holding her. We think she might also be trying to say Lady, the name of her fav lovey, but we might just be listening too carefully/hopefully. :)

LOL. She does it most often in the morning when she wakes up and is occupying herself for a bit. H always says, "Aww...feeding time at the zoo soon." That and, "She's had her shots right?" ;)

  • She was saying mama when she cried for a while but I haven't noticed her doing that as much lately, other than that she's just babbling.

  • My LO's words are just noise.  Lots of dadaadadada and babababa and some nanananaa and mamammamaa.  She says "ha-dada" which sounds like Hi, Dada! so that's cool.

She knows the word UP b/c we say it EVERY time we pick her up.  Now if we say it, she lifts her arms to be picked up.

DH thinks she says "da" when she sees the dog....

I read that ~10 months, they start to associate YOU with mama, etc.  I can't wait!

  • She has been saying "dada" at DH for a while now, but nothing else in particular that means anything. She babbles a ton and makes lots of crazy noises, but no other real words. I think she made the dada connection so early because I say it to her consistently when she sees him first thing in the morning and when he comes home at night.

Her new favorite noise is to scream at the top of her lungs in the highest pitch possible and rock back and forth like a mental patient with her arms outstretched like she's fighting off a demon, then laugh hysterically. She may be possessed, but she makes me laugh. I'll hold off on the exorcism for a while.

  • She does say a lot of "dada", "Hi/hey", and "yay". Yay always accompanies a clap, and she is just so tickled with herself. It is too cute. She definitely knows who dada is, because she looks right at him. She knows who mama is too, she just won't say it.
  • She says "dada" as much as she says "gaga" and for no particular reason, so it doesn't really bother me that she might happen to say "dada" 32,000x when H walks in the room... I'm sure in his head he's all "Yea! I'm the awesome dada!" but no H, she just likes saying "dada" No "mama" or really many other words yet, just a lot of D's and G's so far.

  • We have no 'mama/ dada' going on here at.all. He is so busy trying to learn how to run like a 5 year old (ok, slight exaggeration) that he doesn't care about talking, IMO. He used to say 'baba' about 2 months ago, but that didn't last long, he says 'guh', 'ha', and a lot of 'la la la' when he's happy, oh and, just 'mum' sometimes when he cries, but I don't think it's any correlation to 'mama' or me personally, but I pretend anyways. • He says dada, but he's just stringing together sounds.  He has no idea that it means anything.  I think the only word he actually recognizes is his name, but he obviously doesn't say that.  I read that babies should understand "no" at this age, but he definitely does not.  Then again, I don't really tend to use that word too often with him.
