High-Risk Pregnancy

two vessel cord??

I'm new to this board...I was just told today that I have a two vessel cord and they are referring me to a High Risk Dr. I am really worried. Does anyone else have this?

Re: two vessel cord??

  • My first child had a SUA = single umbilical artery.  I was referred to high-risk docs for that and some other issues.  The scary thing is that it can be a marker for other birth defects so that's why it's normally an automatic referral but those chances are slim so don't freak yourself out googling articles.  They might monitor you for the babies growth since there is only one vessel delivering nutrients/removing waste (can't remember which way it goes) instead of the usual three.  With mine it didn't interfere with her growth and she was delivered past her due date.

Best of luck and try not to stress!

  • DD had a two vessel cord as well as another soft marker. The dr's said her u/s looked great, and our other test results really good, so they weren't worried at all. I was the only one concerned with it, up until the moment she put me in my arms. She was born perfectly healthy at 36w4d and weighing just a bit less than her brother (both of which were awesome for twins). I did get monitored a lot, but much of that I would have had anyway due to it being twins and being on bedrest for other issues (short cervix).
  • I'm 18.5 weeks and have also been diagnosed with a two-vessel cord/SUA.  We're going in for genetic counseling this week, I have a fetal echo in a few weeks, and I'll continue seeing the perinatologist in addition to my regular OB.  So far, everything looks ok and baby is growing right on or ahead of schedule, but it's still too early for them to see everything.  Interestingly, at my u/s today the tech said that there's theories that it could make a difference in your risk factor depending on which artery is missing (left or right).  Best of luck to you!

  • My five month old had a two vessel cord.  The major thing that was different than my other two pregnancies was that I was not allowed to go past my due date.  I was induced at 40 weeks.  Other than that I got a few extra ultrasounds, once it was clear she wasn't IUGR and the fluids were good, they went back to treating me like a regular ob patient.  I was very nervous when I first heard about it, but everything worked out fine.  Good luck!
  • My last pregnancy, I lost at 19weeks. During that u/s, the MFM told me I had a two-vessel cord.  She said it was a 'variation of the norm'.  That being said,  when my pathology came back after my loss, my cord was NOT two -vessel... it was normal 3 vessel cord.

  • My second DS had a two vessel cord and they told me that it wasn't anything to worry about.  It turned out that his placenta had other birth defects as well and he ended up being born at 29 weeks due to placental abruption.  From what I understand though, that all occurred because of multiple problems with the placenta, not just the two vessels.  The good news is that he is a perfectly healthy 3 year old now.  When the High Risk OB explained it to me, he said you would rather have a birth defect in the placenta than the baby.  They are doing the right thing by referring you and keeping a close eye one it, but I would think that since you've gotten to 31 weeks already and I'm guessing everything else is on track, that your baby is perfectly fine.  Best of luck to you!!
  • I'm hoping everything is fine...I have had over 20 Ultrasounds and just had a 3D Ultrasound 3 weeks ago and they didn't notice this until this week. All of my other tests came back perfect and the baby weighs 4lbs 6oz at 31 weeks, so he is growing. It's hard not to worry and I can't get in to see the High Risk Dr until May 2nd, so the not knowing is what is hard.   Good luck to all of you :)

  • My Daughter had a two vessel cord and she is perfect. At my 20 week anatomy scan, the ultrasound tech thought she noticed a two vessel cord (also called Single Artery Umbilical cord- SUA) My doctor wanted me to see Fetal Maternal Medicine for a level 2 ultrasound to verify that it true and once it was verified, I had to go back for a special ultrasound on my daughters organs because sometimes SUA can be a sign that there are other abnormalities with the child. The high scan ultrasound showed that my daughter was perfect. They spent about 20 minutes just looking at her heart- it was SO cool but very stressful at the time. After that, my OB wanted me to have monthly ultrasounds to make sure that she's growing how she should be. It actually was kind of nice to be able to see my baby so many times throughout my pregnancy, but it added a lot of stress especially when we first found out about it.

Many women have it and most of the time there is nothing wrong with the baby. My OB said it's just a random fluke that sometimes happens. Try not to stress out too much! Good luck!

  • SUA is actually pretty common. It can require some extra monitoring, because like PPs said, it can be a soft marker for other things. Your MFM doc will likely do a fetal echocardiogram first & check the kidneys. My LO has SUA, and no issues with her other organs. She did develop IUGR though, and we now go to the high-risk doctor 2-3x per week, but she's still doing ok in there! Try not to worry yourself until you know that there is something to worry about.
