Trying to Get Pregnant

FSH and LH levels?

I went into my doctor's office last week to get  my annual pap and also to tell her about a situation that's been going on with me and my issues with TTC. My last menstrual cycle was 02/19/12 (which was 3 weeks later than I had expected it to be). I came off the Ortho-Tri Cyclen birth control pills about four months ago. I had a withdraw bleeding from stopping, and then had one regular cycle which was the one that occurred in Feb. I am now about 32 days late for my cycle and had my GP check my TSH, LH, FSH, and Prolactin levels. My TSH level is within the normal range it's at an 0.80, my Proloactin level is at an 8, my FSH level is at a 6.7, and my LH level is at a 22.7. I'm 24 years old, 5'6" 140lbs. I just wanted to know if these results are normal, and also if this means that I am ovulating regularly or if I'm even ovulating at all? We are TTC and it's getting frustrating not having a regular cycle. I've taken 3 pregnancy tests (no blood tests), all of which have been negative. Any input or personal experiences in relation to this is greatly appreciated. Thank you! (I hope I'm posting this in the right place)

Re: FSH and LH levels?

  • Hormone levels have to be tested on day 3 of your cycle to really get any insight into whether they are normal or not.  I'm assuming it wasn't day 3?

I'm looking at my own test results and the normal ranges they used, here they are:

    LH:

    FOLLICULAR . . . . . . . . . . . . . MIU/ML 1.9 - 11.6
    MID-CYCLE PEAK . . . . . . . . . . . MIU/ML 12.9 - 90.3
    LUTEAL . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . MIU/ML 0.5 - 10.4

    FSH:

    FOLLICULAR . . . . . . . . . . . . . MIU/ML 3.2 - 11.5
    MID-CYCLE PEAK . . . . . . . . . . . MIU/ML 4.3 - 19.9
    LUTEAL . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . MIU/ML 1.5 - 7.1

    Proloactin: Standard Range: 2.0 - 27.0 NG/ML

To confirm ovulation, I suggest using basal body thermometer to take morning daily temps and recording them on fertilityfriend.com which is free. My RE tested me during follicular and luteal phases, the progesterone indicated that I was ovulating.

    Me: 32, DH: 34.

Okay, thank you. I don't know what part of my cycle I'm in considering the fact that I'm soooo late which is aggravating. I put a request in to have my GP give me a call sometime today to talk with her about the results so we'll have to see what she says. I appreciate it!

  • I have a really similar situation - I had one normal cycle off BCPs, and then everything went really weird. I had some blood work done on CD85 or something like that, and I had I think a similar FSH number, and my LH was about a 13 or something like that.

I recently went to a RE for my weird cycles, and he said that his concern was that it *could* be indicative of PCOS having a LH of twice or more of the FSH value, but that it wasn't too reliable since it wasn't done on CD3 and my LH could have just be surging at the time.

So long story short - I agree with the PP that you do need CD3 blood work done to be sure of anything!
