F/U post: Lead Test

Sooo, I posted last week about whether or not I should get the lead test for ds and I am taking him to the lab tonight (after I pick him up) to get the test.  I called the lab to ask if they could prick him in the finger or toe rather than a venous draw and they said they could do the finger.  I am scared for him b/c I remember as a kid the finger prick hurts for hours afterwards.  I will give him some motrin if needed but I am not looking forward to it but I will feel better when it's over knowing that he was tested (my ped does not routinely test for lead, I am making the call b/c - yes, I am that neurotic mommy!)

Re: F/U post: Lead Test

  • Good for you!  We're going to get it done too at DS's 15-month check-up.

  • I know I posed last week to encourage you, it will be fine and over so fast he won't even remember.

I literally just got the results about 5 min. ago and it's nice to know all is well.

thanks!  i remember your reply and it did make me feel better about the whole thing.  i really don't have a worry for lead poisioning but it sticks in the back of my mind and not knowing just drives me crazy.  i feel the need to know everything that is going on in my little man's body, kwim?  so i will go through the hassle of going to the lab and waiting and having him tested.  just makes me feel better.

  • Honestly I think he will be fine. Our lab won't do the finger prick they have to draw blood, so it could be worse. ;) If it makes you feel any better my little sister had her finger pricked consntantly when she was a baby/toddler/etc bc she has hypoglosemia (sp?) and she was fine as soon as it was over with. GL!

  • The test is quick and not that bad. Where we live, a test is required at 12 months, so all the babies have to do it. I wasn't concerned, but I think it's still peace of mind when it comes back negative.

  • This is going to sound really bitchy but it's not meant that way.. you care so much about the lead and what's going on in your little mans body but you let them give him the mercury containing flu shot instead of opting for the one without it.. mercury is more toxic to the brain.
