Clothes for baby FTM question.
We've been buying LO clothes all along, as have my parents. And now that I've had two baby showers and have a 3rd coming up in 3 weeks, I am worried that I have too many outfits and onesies for LO. Is 30 per size as excessive as it seems? Do they really need that much?
Re: how much is too much
I would wash some but not all. We had way to much for DD and it was insane how many things she wore once or not at all.
also, are you talking 30 outfits or 30 items. newborn and 0-3 month outfits are cute but my kids ended up living in onesies and sleepers so most of the cute outfits were never worn.
It seems as though I am in the same boat as you. haha
When we found out, we bought like, 2 things, but then my Mother and MIL keep buying outfits, and then I got new stuff from friends, and hand me downs that are like new from friends/coworkers, and well...my shower isn't until May 19th, and I already have MORE than enough clothes. haha
In the NB and 0-3m sizes, its almost entirely onesies and pj's. I have some little pants, shorts and jeans to go with the onesies if needed.
It depends on how fast your baby grows. DD is very tall so she never wore any size for more than 6 weeks or so. I never bought a thing myself and she still had too much clothes. So many cute things that she never even wore. Her growth only slowed down a bit at around 7 months, when she was already wearing 9-12 month clothes. Now at 9 months she has just moved up to 12-18 months. So it's hard to tell how much they will really need until they get here.
I wouldn't wash everything as pp said. Keep some stuff to exchange for bigger sizes because eventually the gifts will run out and you'll have to buy some things yourself. Exchanges will be handy then.
I think it all depends on how you're going to dress LO. DD did not wear ANY shirts, shorts, or pants for the first 6 months of her life. She was either in footed pjs or a onesie/romper. Some people want to dress their baby in "real clothes" when they go out or go to daycare. I prefer DD to be comfortable over stylish.
It also depends when your LO has growth spurts. I think 30 in each size will either be too much or just right. I'd stop buying/start returning things at the point. If you absolutely can't help yourself when shopping, start buying multi-season friendly (you never know what size LO will be wearing, my DD is 15 months and wearing 2T already) clothes in bigger sizes. People stop buying you clothes after about 6 months and you'll be happy you have a stock pile of bigger sizes.
That's probably a lot. You can expect to get another 20+ outfits as gifts soon after the birth.
I also agree with Holly. If a lot of your outfits for the first 6 months are "dress-up," I would definitely return some. I always wanted DD to be in comfy clothes, so we used the sleepers and onsies more than anything else. Newborns are just to floppy for real clothes...I think it looks silly.
We didn't buy much ourselves, but I ended up taking back over half of the outfits that we got from the baby shower. Now, I have a bunch of gift cards to multiple places, and have been stocking up on other things we'll need for baby, as well as diapers as they go on sale. I'm a FTM, but 30 does seem like alot, as quickly as babies grow.
