XP: Teachers/mom's of school agers help please

Help me girls I need some guidance... Maggie will be an early 5 year old, the cut off for kindergarten is Sept 30 and her birthday is Sept 7. I was leaning toward pre-K this year and kindergarten next year. A little background info: she is the oldest, currently she goes to preschool 4 days a week, half days. The pre-K and Kindergarten programs are all day, everyday. Currently her preschool teacher says she is academically ready for kindergarten. However, I think she is a little immature. My husband wants to send her to kindergarten and I'm so confused. I've heard nothing but positives about starting her later in kindergarten.... help me please Smile

  • I was a public school pk teacher. The cut off here is December 31! If it were me I would probably start her but it really depends on the individual child and family. Turning five in September isn't bad when here we have kids not Turing five til December.

This. I teach early el and a September birthday is not bad. If she is ready academically then start her. If she was a boy, I would say wait.

  • I am an elementary teacher in a public school in upstate NY and have taught K in the past.  I would go ahead and start her.  If her pre-k teacher says that she is ready, then I would go with that recommendation.  Although K is more rigorous than it was in the past, it is also still a time for maturing and preparing for success in the grades beyond.  If she is ready academically, then send her.  A year of boredom/repetition of what she has already had mad actually make her dislike school more than a new, exciting setting where she will be challenged.  The most learning happens when students are stretched and challeneged.  Good luck!

  • I am not a teacher or a Mommy of a school kid, but I was an early starter and I did fine. I didn't even really notice that I was younger than the other kids until I was in Jr. High or so. I always did well in school, and was proud to have graduated High school at 17 (not that it really makes a difference now looking back...but then I thought it was cool.)
  • I used to teach PreK and am a certified elementary school teacher. I also have a birthday that is near the cut-off date, so I was one of the youngest in my grade. All that being said, I would start your daughter in Kindergarten. As a PP said, her current teacher said that she's ready, and its better to have her be challenged than bored and getting into mischief all year in PreK. You can always start her, and if her Kindergarten teacher thinks that she needs to be held back, then hold her. No biggie. I would definitely put her in Kindergarten though. If it was a boy, I might reconsider.

  • I replied in the other "s/o" post, but here the cut off is also Dec 31st. Early Sept would still be very common and reasonable.

  • I disagree with the other ladies. As a School Psychologist, I always recommend waiting. It is better to be the oldest than the youngest. Those few months mean a lot.

this. I was the oldest in my class and it served me so much better. I would have had a horrible time in HS if I had to be in the class above me.
