Ferber question re. sitting/crawling in crib (XP)

Up until now, Mason hadn't figured out that he could get into a sitting position and crawl around in his crib.  Ferber had been working like a charm.  Today during his second nap he suddenly realized he could do these things and didn't sleep a wink.  He actually ended up sitting and crying for about 30 minutes.  I did the checks and I tried laying him back down on his back like 20 times, but he immediately rolled over and got back into the sitting position.  I don't know what to do when he does this, and I'm so worried he's going to do this during his night wakings and be up all night.  Do I immediately go in and lay him down?  Do I just do it during the checks? (even though he rolls right back over and sits up b/f I even leave the room)  I just don't know what to do.

Also, he doesn't know how to go from sitting to laying down on his back (which is the only way he sleeps) by himself, so I'm afraid if I just leave him, he'll never fall asleep b/c he can't lay down.  What would you do?

Re: Ferber question re. sitting/crawling in crib (XP)

  • N was standing when we started Ferber and he did stand up a lot at first.  I was worried because it was when he first started standing and didn't exactly know how to get back down.  I just kept laying him down (only at the checks) and eventually he stayed down.  He will a) learn how to lay himself down soon and b) get used to being able to sit on his own so the novelty will wear off for him.

  • I am really not much help on the Ferber front, but L did the same thing. She would roll over, get up on her knees, and sit up. Then, she would scream and cry. She couldn't figure out how to lay back down, so I would check on her and lay her back down. Eventually, she would fall asleep sitting up (this was a little funny...she would fall forward with her head between her legs), so I would roll her to her side. Now, she just flips over and falls asleep on her belly, no crying. I thought she would only sleep on her side/back because that is what she always did, but now she just sleeps on her tummy (and, I think, sleeps longer). (the first few nights she cried for up to an hour...now she doesn't cry at all)

Hope LO gets good sleep soon!

  • Thanks for the reassurance ladies!  We'll stick with it and I'm sure work something out eventually.
