S/O traveling and carriers

We are taking LO to Italy in Sept.  He'll be 9 months by then.

I saw the post below where many people recommended the Ergo.  I was reading reviews but it doesn't seem like the baby can face out while on your front. Is this true? Is it bad to have them face out and this is why you can't wear them this way?  I'm using a Bjorn right now and LO loves to look out but he's getting too big for me to wear it.

Also, do any of your husbands/SO wear the Ergo and feel comfortable?  DH will most likely be wearing LO most of the time and probably on his back.

Does anyone know if any stores like REI, other sporting goods stores or even BRU allow you to try them on to see how they fit?

Thanks!

Re: S/O traveling and carriers

  • Facing a baby out makes it harder for you to carry them comfortably as they aren't held closely to your body. It can also put the baby in an unsupported position.

You should be able to try the Etgo on in a store. You may want to see if there is a local baby wearing group, that way you can try different carriers as they are like jeans, what works for me may not for you.

You can not face out in an Ergo. Get a Beco Gemini if you want one that can face out, it is better than the bjorn. My dh wears both the Beco and the Ergo.

  • Get a Beco Gemini. Facing outwards is arguably not that good for longer times (back problems, baby being overstimulated) but most babies like it for a short time and it is great with the possibility for variety. I traveled all over with my Beco Gemini and love it. I originally tried an Ergo but it didn't fit me well, I am too short (have a short torso) which was one of the reasons I got the Gemini. Some stores have both that you can try on, but mainly smaller independent stores (I bought my Gemini online). Good luck, traveling around that age is a great time!

  • If you can't find somewhere locally to try the Gemini on there are places online that you can rent from. I'm using quirkybaby.com, but there are others as well.
