SO got accepted to FSU and WVU for grad school (to get his PhD in econ). At FSU he got tuition paid and a $19,000 teaching assistantship (working 20 hours a week). At WVU he got tuition paid and a $20,000 fellowship (no work required).
We are both kind of torn. He would be more busy at FSU, so less time to spend with DD and me. But DD is already very close with my parents (we live next door to them) and we would be a days drive from them if we choose FSU.
Any opinions? Or any info you'd like to share about Morgantown, WV or Tallahassee, FL?
Re: BIG decisions! (NBR)
Are the universities/programs very far apart on rankings? If so, go with the one that he will ultimately make more money after he graduates. If they are about the same, then choose the one that allows more time with your LO.
If I had to choose between them based on locations, I would choose FSU.
My H got his PhD in '09. Is one program more targeted/ideal for what he wants to do when he graduates, or are they similar? In other words, does one better align with his research interests?
Would you be near family if he went to WVU? If you have a good relationship with your family, you cannot place a value on living near them. We moved 800 miles from family for my H's job after he graduated, and it has been very hard on me now that we have a child. I would do anything to live closer to our families, and while we needed to make this move for H's career, it is a major negative.
As for being busy, he's going to be busy regardless. So, I wouldn't factor that in as much -- getting a PhD is grueling no matter where you go. I'd consider which program is better/more appropriate for him (if one is) and how important proximity to family is to you.
Congrats! This is a good problem to have! GL with your decision.
Tallahassee's not exactly a metropolis either. It is a looong drive to anywhere. My sister went to FSU and she liked it, but I didn't love it when I went to visit her. My husband went to Marshall, so he has to hate WVU of course, but Morgantown is a beautiful part of the country. I would go WV over FL, and I grew up in North Florida. But I,m a mountain girl ( says the girl who lives at the beach...).
Are you going to go visit them both?
Thank you all for giving your input!
To answer the questions you all posed: the program at FSU is ranked higher than the program at WVU. No, we can't visit them both (I wish we could, that would make this decision a lot more informed), he has to give them his answer by Friday - so its a pretty rushed decision. And no, we wouldn't have any family nearby at WVU.
We would be a 6 hour drive from my family if we were at FSU...do y'all think its realistic to make that trip pretty frequently with a little one?
