Breastfeeding

Going back to work

I have been EBFing plus adding 3-5 pumping sesions in during the day. I have noticed that after I am done pumping, even if nothing is coming out and can hand express more milk but it is such a pain and takes so long to do it that way. I am going back to work in a few weeks and I am worried that because I am not completely emptying my breasts I won't be able to keep up with my LO's needs. Any ideas that might help?

Re: Going back to work

  • Do you do hand expressions as you pump?  I have found this shortens my pumping sessions and produces more milk.  When I pump at work, I only pump about 10 min and am able to get anywhere from  5-9 oz from both sides at my 1st pump and about 4-6 oz at my 2nd pump.

I can always squeeze more milk out of my boobs by hand all the time - after LO nurses or after I pump.  I haven't had any problems with pumping what DD needs (and more) while at work or with her getting enough from nursing.  I read an article somewhere, in fact, that the breast is usually only at most something like 70% empty (if that).  At first while pumping for work you may not already get what LO needs, but after a while of figuring things out it should all fall into place!  I know I was so worried about everything falling to pieces when I started working, but it really just takes time to figure it all out.  I'm sure if things have been going well so far they will continue to go well.  Best wishes!

  • I have flexible flanges. While I pump I also massage my breast to help get more milk out. in order for me to keep up I pump for about 10 mins thennurse before I leave for work. I also pump on lunch then pump & nurse again when I get home.

  • Ditto doing compressions while pumping.  Also, I do hand expression for 3-5 minutes afterwards - I get another 0.5-1oz that way.  And another ditto for PP who said it does take a minute to get into the swing of things, so don't stress out if you don't pump "enough" at first - you will get there.  :-)
