Babies: 9 - 12 Months

How long do you feed purees?

I have a few friends with babies and frequently read on here about giving your LO what you eat from 6 months and while I have given DD leftovers and stuff from the night before, we rarely eat dinner before DD goes to bed which I'm trying to get away from doing so but it's hard! Anyway... She still gets mainly purees mixed with formula and a little bit of oatmeal. I've been trying to give her a finger food with every meal but she is kind of picky and I haven't been able to think of anything new lately. I do grilled cheese, cheese, peeled grapes, pasta (she loves any kind of pasta), mixed veggies, pancakes, and puffs. She is a really good chewer, especially for only having 4 teeth! She is just weird about textures, she won't eat anything that feels slimy so it's hard to give her fruits. Does this end? How long is too long to use purees? I thought I was doing OK with introducing foods but DD is already being picky and I can't figure out how to get away from the purees and give her a well rounded meal without them. She is 11 months should I be weaning her from them? Oh and if she sees that I am eating something she ALWAYS wants it but then if i put it on her tray for her to eat she won't eat it! Never thought I'd have a picky eater, she didn't get it from her Mama that's for sure! LOL

  • Ever baby is different.  Some take a while to get used to eating finger foods.  I'd say just keep offering different foods, she'll take to them eventually.

This is very true for mine too.

  • They are so different.  DD#2 started eating purees around 5 months, she was eating finger foods by 6.5 months and hasn't let me feed her purees since.  My older daughter probably had purees until almost 10 months.  LO will get there, as pp said, just keep offering it.

  • I was giving both  finger foods and purees at each meal (like scrambled egg and apple puree for example) but for like the past 4 days he has been spitting out the puree all over the place so i think its him telling me he doesn't want them anymore! I just hope he will keep eating stage 3 meals for a little longer because they are so easy when i'm out and about.

This!  Just keep offering them, along with purees to avoid frustration from hunger, and eventually LO will catch on.

I just gave DD what we were eating cut into easy to grasp pieces.  Veggies and fruits are easiest at first if they're given in spears.  If she doesn't like the slippery fruits, give them to her with the peel on.  Grapes are especially fine with the peel (just make sure to cut them in half or they're a choking hazard), but even fruits with inedible peels like mango are fine to give on the peel; babies can figure out how to scrape off the flesh and spit out the peel (and if they accidentally swallow some, it's not harmful).

  • I would think she'd be off purees by now. There's often a small time period that they switch to finger foods easily which you may have missed.
We've had a few dieticians and nurses come to our mommy/baby group and they've all said most babies only "need" purees for a month.
With DD she never had purees we're doing baby led weaning so she's always had what we eat.

  • Eh, sounds like I'm in the minority here, but I did purees with DS #1 for a long time...mixed with chunks of food as he got closer to 1 year old and then beyond.  Even when we were done with baby food purees, I still gave him things like applesauce with ground up chicken in it (he only had 2 teeth at 1 year old).  He would get chunks of food, too, but I wanted to make sure he would get a good meal.  He is an AWESOME eater even still.  He has never given me a problem with ANYTHING.  He still eats veggies and fruits daily, and has no problems with textures.  I don't think we missed any kind of window.  Actually, I think it was better to keep giving purees 'cause he got a lot more of the foods that were good for him that way.  We weren't the best eaters as adults in the family, so I felt better that he was getting "good" stuff from purees.  DS #2 is just over 10 months old and he only gets 2 purees per day...the rest is breastfeeding.  He gets a little chunk here and there, and he's interested, but he still chokes so we're not looking to move him to just that yet.  So, I guess I'm telling you to do what you think is best for your LO and really don't mind anybody else's methods.  There really isnt' a rule and in my opinion, people really try to make their kids grow up way too fast.  I'm perfectly happy with my babies being babies for a while.  Chances are, my kids aren't going to have any difficulties because I gave them purees for a while.  Believe me, I'll have bigger things to worry about in a few years.  ;)  Good luck, whatever you decide.  Just do what works for you and your LO.  You can't go wrong that way!
  • Nora started purees shortly after 5 months and was completely off purees at 10 months. I introduced finger foods on a regular basis around 8 months.

  • DS is nearly a year, and he eats very few finger foods.  He prefers purees.  I'll continue to offer finger foods with every meal, and he'll eat what he wants when he's good and ready.

Don't stress about your LO's eating habits.  As long as there is any progress at all, everything will likely be just fine.

  • Every baby is different. My dd never took to pur?es so we just did blw right off the bag, but my friends dd is one day younger than mine and she hasn't had a single finger food yet.

Can you do scrambled eggs before 12 months? I have read/heard you can do the yolks but not the whites.

  • My LO still eats mainly purees and seems perfectly content. He is a good eater so I don't worry about it. I am definately introducing more finger foods and just recently he is loving picking up cheerios and eating them. I am just taking it one day at a time and just satisfied that DS likes to eat good food. Like pp's said, I wouldn't stress, do what feels right. Good luck!

  • if LO doesn't like touching the slimy food (but obviously will eat it since purees are generally slimy, right?) then there's a simple solution:  Crush up rice krispie cereal and roll your "slimy" foods in it to form a crust on it.  Makes it easier for little fingers to grasp as well as, in your case, the food won't/shouldn't feel slimy.  Might help!

We started scrambled eggs at 6 months. We've had 3 dieticians come to our mommy/baby group and they've all said it's fine. The "rules" have recently changed here (NB Canada) and really the only thing they say to wait on is nuts, honey, and whole milk (fine cooked into things though)
