Lincoln has been waking up from a deep sleep because he's pressed up against the side of the crib. I am not sure if he is hitting his head or if it simply hurts, etc.
A few moms have looked at me like I was a fool and told me to put the bumpers on the crib. Due to obvious reasons, the bumpers have not been up thus far. I took down the breathable ones when he started trying to pull himself up on them (we also lowered the mattress.) They're adamant the reasons for not using them do not apply to him at 8.5 months old.
I don't want him to hurt himself or lose sleep so what is everyone else doing in this situation?
P.S. What a waste it is for manufacturers to include bumpers in bedding sets given that many people are fearful to use them. I would much rather get an extra sheet, etc. We had a middle-of-the-night accident last week and I sure was thankful for the extra sheet a friend had loaned me!

Re: A Better Solution to Bumpers?
We have a breathable bumper from BRU that is so thin DD can't use it to pull on/climb on, but keeps her from hurting herself on the wood.
I agree with you, I think they should be discontinued. Chicago actually outlawed the sale of them. I think that's wonderful.
I have extra sheets for his bed. I just thought it would be better if an extra sheet were included since many manufacturers intend to include an item, anyway. It wasn't really a common sense versus total idiot issue, just personal commentary on a better way to market to people.
I really am glad you asked this! I have been wondering the same thing. C hits his head on his crib nearly every day. We have breathable bumpers on now that are mesh & are useless as far as protecting him goes. They are also from BRU.
I'm interested to see if anyone has another solution. Yesterday, I had to lay down with him in our bed until he passed out & then move him to his crib. Otherwise he spends nap time trying to stand up, hitting his head, screaming until I go in & comfort/lay him back down. Lather. Rinse. Repeat.
This is what C's breathable bumpers do, but I could do with a LITTLE more padding. Guess I will have to shop around for a more padded breathable. Hopefully one exists.
Yeah, that's on my radar, too. I am thinking of trying to find one of those plastic guards that fits.
