C-sections

for those of you who pushed before the c-section...

How long did you push before they decided to get the c-section?  What other interventions were used?

I pushed for 6 hours and they attempted to vacuum my daughter 4 times (which gave me the unnecessary and undesired episiotomy) before we went for the c-section.  It was only when they got me in the OR and opened me up did they find out she was sideways

Re: for those of you who pushed before the c-section...

  • three hours. The only intervention that was attempted was trying to get him into a better position (he was OP with brow presentation) which was horrible and ultimately unsuccessful. No episiotomy, no forceps, no vacuum.

  • I pushed for 3 hours and he was also crooked in there.  There were no other procedures and looking back I'm bothered by that!

less than 20 minutes...he was showing some signs of distress as he started to finally descend and then his heart rate dropped a lot everytime I pushed.   So I was rushed into the ER.   Turned out that almost the entire cord was compressed betweeen his head/chin and shoulder.

  • Two and a half hours. I refused the vacuum or forceps. The nurse told me it was the best decision bc she has seen so many women end up trying everything and ending up with an episiotomy & still need the c-section. When they took him out the found him sunny side up with the cord around his neck. They said there was no way he was coming out.
  • probably 15-20 minutes, tops. His heart rate was dropping with each push so that was worrisome and my midwife and a doctor could tell from the outside that his head wasnt going to make it past my pelvic bone..so off we went! no interventions

  • I think around 2 hours, but my OB was not in the room for most of it.  She basically had me push a few times with her hand up my vag and then said "baby's head is not moving down at all when you push, your baby is stuck, you need a c/s."  No attempts at switching my position, rotating the baby or using vacuum or forceps.  My baby was nt having any heart decels but there was some light meconium.  Looking back, I don't think my doctor gave me enough of a shot at delivering vaginally but who knows, maybe it was for the best.  When she did the surgery, she discovered my baby was OP.

  • 6 hrs (though my dh said it was closer to 8 hrs). After using suction it was discovered that ds's head was just to big for come out.

Sure enough after the cs she said "there was NO way he was coming out vaginally w/ that head".

  • A few pushes and he was having terrible "Lates" so my midwife brought the OB on-call in and she said he was too far up to be able to get him with forceps or the vacuum. She said she'd give me 20 minutes to try to allow him to move down on his own. Easier said than done as I had been going all natural so I felt it all and majorly had the urge to push. She ended up giving me an hour, I tried to push 3 times and his heart rate plummeted on the 3rd push and they said no more.  Since I had no epidural I ended up with general, but when I woke up they told me it was the right decision as he had tied his feet up with the cord multiple times and then had all of the slack bunched up between his head and my pelvis so he wasn't coming out without safely the natural way. Doesn't make it any less difficult to deal with though, unfortunately.
  • Two and a half hours.  My water broke 3.5 weeks early and he had not really dropped down at all.  He didn't want to come down so after pushing for a while my doctor said that I could push for another hour(she didn't think it would help) or I could have a csection.  I was exhausted so I said fine to the section.  I have no regrets.

  • I pushed for four hours, and then they did an u/s and discovered he was OP (no attempts were made to figure out his position until then). He wasn't in a good position to use the vacuum, so I was given the choice of an epidural and some rest, or the c/s.  I was exhausted at that point, and chose the c/s instead of more pushing.

    DS2 - Oct 2010 (my VBAC baby!)

  • 3.5 hours, no interventions other than Doc manually trying to turn her, the nurse had me try pushing on all fours, nothing helped.  She never made it past 0 station, she was facing my left hip, so she couldn't come out that way.  The epi wore off after about 30 mins of pushing and I was in agony, only actually pushing helped the pain.  It was not a good time.
  • HI THERE..I PUSHED FOR 14 HOURS THEY TRYED EVERY POSITION THEY COULD PUT ME IN THE HEART BEAT DROP BECAUSE HER HEAD WAS TO BIG FOR MY PELVIC AREA .SO THE MORE I PUSHED AND THE MORE SHE WAS TRYING 2 COME DOWN AND COULDN'T THE MORE SHE BECAME DISTRESS SO I WAS RUSHED INTO AN EMERGENCY C-SECTION AND THEN AFTER THAT ME AND BABY WAS HOSPITALIZED FOR 12 DAYS..I WONT EVER FORGET THAT PREGNANCY EVER!!

  • I pushed for 45 min.  Her heartrate was sky rocketing and not dropping back down at all.  After 25 min or so the nurse brought in the Doctor and they told me DD need to come out quickly, so they used vacuum.  My room was filled with people, Dr. and nurses for me, and NICU nurses for DD incase her heartrate didn't drop once she was out.  Unfortunately, the vacuum popped off her head 3 times and after that they can't use it anymore.  So after the 2nd pop they did episiotomy, and unfortunately it popped off a third time.  That was when I was rushed to the OR for my c/s.

Dr. told me the vacuum and episiotomy are their last ditch effort to get baby out before a c/s.  A few hours after recovery, the Dr. came to my room and actually apologized for the episiotomy.  Saying he really thought she was going to come out because she was right there, but it just wasn't happening fast enough for DD's safety.  I have no regrets about what happened and I'm glad the Dr. exhausted all efforts before taking me into surgery.

  • I pushed for 2 hours, and they tried to vacuum extract DS, but he still wouldn't descend.

  • I pushed for 2 hours but she was slightly crooked and I had a second bag of water what was preventing her from moving. Once they found that bag and popped it, she was already showing signs of distress. They called for a CS shortly after. No other interventions were done.

  • I pushed for about 3 hours. DS was OP, which we knew. We tried literally every.single.position. Nothing got him to turn. But we didn't not have any intervetions, I did not want them.

Once we were in the OR, after my spinal, DS's heartrate dropped. I ended up sleeping throught most of my section, but I found out later that he was out in 3 minutes. They said that I have a narrow pelvic arch and that having children naturaly may not be an option for me. But we are TTC #2, so when I am pregnant I plan on seeing the doctor that performs VBACs and getting her opinion.

  • Over 2 hours. Ultrasound determined that DS was OP and not budging.
  • Four hours.  Only interventions were position changes (no forceps, vacuum).  DD descended the first 2 hours, then just stopped.  I had decided before the birth not to be too emotionally attached to any specific birth plan, and that a "successful" birth (for me) would not defined by how DD was born but if she was healthy.

About 3 hours, 15 mins. They didn't bother trying to get her out; she wouldn't budge under my pelvic bone.

  • I was indueced due to GD and hypertension issues. DD never dropped down even though I dialated. They allowed me to push to see if I could help bring her down. We honestly only pushed for 10 mins or so and DD was showing distress plus she wasn't budging so we went for the c/s!
  • 6 hours!!! omg.  I pushed for 3.5 and was exhausted.  The epi wore off so I felt it all.  My hospital only lets you push for 3 before c-section , but I begged for an extra 1/2 hour....i was nuts

  • 1.5 hours. LO's heartrate kept falling so they did an amnio-infusion but it didn't work. She was also stuck so when they did the c/s, the doctor had to push up through my vagina to get her "unstuck" and then lift her out through the uterus.

3.5 hours.  The little toot's head was turned, and after my doctor tried to turn his head the right way, he just moved it right back.  He wasn't in any distress, but the doctor said that she wanted me to think about "other options."  I told her that we should just go ahead and do the c/s.  And that I wanted my mommy.

The whole gaping wound (I got a wound infection later.  Yippie) in my abdomen PLUS the sore crotch was so very much fun in recovery.  Tongue Tied

  • 2 hours. She was truly stuck up there. She never dropped below a -2. Neither she nor I were in any danger, so the OB had no problem with me trying even though she was showing no signs of descending.
