My local CD store hosted a facebook party with several different CD people last night. Here are a few tips I learned from a chemist who works for Bummis and does research on all things diper laundry related.
If you are using a CD safe detergent most repelling issues are due to buildup from oils in poop and not from detergent buildup. This means you should use more detergent and not less. Detergent residue is not that common, unless you are using way too much detergent or too little water
Natural fibers get stiff most commonly from mineral buildup from hard water. Instead of masking the problem with fabric softener, she suggested doing a strip with RLR.
Vinegar can also help release some mineral buildup.
The main ingredient in most detergent is surfactant which allows water to more easily penetrate the fabric This ingredient is even more important for polyester and microfiber because they are fabrics that do not like water. Most homemade detergents do not have surfactants so they are missing this crucial ingredient which is important for synthetic fabrics
She does not recommend soap nuts with hard water. The minerals in hard water will bind and leave a scum
Warm rinse (body fluids are most soluble at body temperature which is warm so warm is better than cold for getting initial dirt out) Then hot wash because all detergents work better at higher temps (make sure your manufacturer allows for hot) The extra rinse to make sure you are getting any left over detergent/dirt out.
This stuff may be common knowledge for many of you CD veterans, but I just thought I would pass along some of the things I learned in case it helps someone.
edited for spelling... typing while nursing is a challenge these days ![]()
Re: A few new laundry tips I learned from Bummis last night
Diagnosed with PCOS March '10 - Started 1000mg of Metformin

After 3 unsuccessful Clomid cycles, FSH+Ovidril+IUI+Progesterone=BFP!
Time to make Emilie a big sister!
May '16 2.0: Letrozole+FSH+Menopur+Ovidril+IUI+Progesterone=BFP! first beta-45.44, second beta-148
Thanks for posting this. I've heard these two before and really think they deserve some space in our FAQ. Too many recommendations to strip for detergent buildup when the real issue is rinsing out oily poo residue and upping the wash routine.
Started TTC 05.08
Me: Stage II endo, borderline high FSH
DH: perfect
1 lap, 5 IUIs = 4 BFNs and 1 c/p
2 IVFs, 2 FETs = 1 BFN, 1 c/p, 1 ectopic and finally a sticky BFP in May 2011!
1 FET in Aug 2013 = BFP!
Yep!!!
Edit to add.... So fun to meet a local bumpie. Are you going to the Great Diaper Change? Congrats on the LO. He is a cutie.
Thanks! Unfortunately, no - my parents are visiting this weekend from out of town, so I'm going to miss it.

You have. This is a holdover from times when people also tossed dirty diapers in wet pails. The thinking was that a warm rinse would set stains. It doesn't. The temp of the final rinse doesn't matter because you're rinsing out detergent, and they're made to work with any temp. I am very happy with my warm-hot-cold routine.
Ditto! So thanks for this info!
