Curly Haired Baby Mamas

I need some help! Ky has crazy hair. It is not omg curly hair but it has this wave/loose curl to it in the back especially. Problem is her hair is also super fine. So while it looks good damp and when it first dries, it gets CRAZY when she sleeps or rolls around on the rugs/furniture. It gets all tangled and poofs out like cotton candy from her head. I have bought detangling spray in an effort to be able to get a comb through it in the morning but I DREAD doing her hair in the mornings. Even just running a comb through it is torture, she cries and screams and I in turn feel uber guilty. I have thick, sitck straight hair and have never had a problem with massive tangles so I have no clue what I can use on her hair to help the situation. I am open to any suggestions on products or tip/tricks you use to tame crazy curly bedhead!

Re: Curly Haired Baby Mamas

  • DW and I both have crazy, curly fro heads.  Hers is super fine and mine is so thick I could lose things in it.  This may sound nutty but DW still uses a product for kids to get the tangles out of her head in the winter when she lets it grow out a bit.  It is called suave kids detangling spray.  My mom used a similar product on me when I was little too.  It saved A LOT of pain and tears.  Good luck with your curly haired baby girl.  She will always hear " Oh how I wish how I had all those wonderful curls" from people but uggg can they be annoying.
We had three BFN in the Fall of 2011. It is back on to some baby making come June. Swim little fellas, SWIM!!!!

LOL. I love her curls and wish I had them. My biological father has curls when his hair grows some and so do both of my cousins!

I have the Suave stuff now and it seems to help but only a bit. Mostly it just drips everywhere! Maybe I am not letting it sit long enough before I try and brush?

  • what kind of brush are you using?  I like the tangle teezer and just a regular hair pick.

also, in addition to the detangling spray, we use a leave-in conditioner after ever bath.

  • I don't know what just happened with the computer...sorry. I tried to delete but I couldn't.

We got the idea to use this from SSG: https://www.johnsonsbaby.com/johnsons-no-more-tangles-extra-conditioning-shampoo

Then we use this every combing: https://www.johnsonsbaby.com/johnsons-no-more-tangles-detangling-spray

We hold the base of Peanut's hair when we comb through it. You may do this, so forgive me if I repeat steps you take.

One thing that helps also is giving her at least 3 parts. She normally has a curl on top, and two in the back. This helps when combing in the morning. Peanut's hair is fine and curly.

I just had to add some of C's artwork:

  • Grayson has very straight hair, but I assume rats crawl into his bed and make a nest during the night because he wakes up with the biggest mess of hair in the back of his head. I have started putting a small amount of conditioner in his hair when he takes a shower at night and making sure I comb it through. I also use detanlger spray (although I have found that with the conditioner, if I just wet it with water, it works just as well) and a wide toothed comb.

I just use the comb that came in the newborn care kit. Is there a brand or type you recommend?

  • I found that a comb with wider spaced teeth work best. I used the baby comb until fairly recently and it was a nightmare getting out the knots. Ours is like this:

  • I second the Tangle Teezer, I use it on all the kids and none of them complain about their hair getting pulled.

I also use Kinky Curly Knot Today, it's a detangler/leave-in that I use everyday on Owl and occasionally on Iz now that her hair is short.  I've used it on A's hair for stubborn tangles but more than a smidge will weight her straight hair down.  I think Kinky Curly also has a spray detangler that I'm sure would be lighter.  I get the KC stuff at Target.

  • We use the J&J shampoo, detangler and also the leave in conditioner.  E's hair is crazy curly, thick and fine.  It could be a full time job.  We use the knot genie as a brush that seems very similar to the brushes pp talked about.  I soak her hair in detangler brush, scrunch and then put in the leave in conditioner.

  • Just +1ing everything PP said. Detangling spray, a very wide tooth comb, leave in conditioner. I never comb or brush my hair. My fingers are all I use. Harder to pull off with a little one but remember that curly hair wants to be tangled in a certain pattern, so work with the pattern to bring out more curl. The less you touch it the better, and never comb or brush it when it's dry. Good luck!
  • I am a hair stylist and also the mother of a curly haired little girl. The best thing I have found is leave in conditioner my paul mitchell or Walmart brand childrens hair detangler with a paddle brush. I know most people say no brushes but it works best on my daughter. She screams when I try to get through the tangles with a comb.

     Hope that helps Smile
