Did anyone else almost pee themselves at 1st U/S?

So I don't always find the time to get on here, but I def had no idea how bad the first u/s was re: the 40 ounce drinking thing...YIKES. I was literally crying on the way to the dr because I was so uncomfortable and was certain I wasn't going to make the 20 min drive and would wet myself :( I was on the phone w/ DH, who was waiting for me there, and he was like "pull over and pee!" LOL - he didn't understand that they couldn't do the u/s if I did and I refused to give in. I guess it doesn't help that I'm a super tiny person to begin with and have a small bladder, then I get there and the u/s tech said "oh she's so small, she could have drank 33 ounces instead!" Seriously?? lol. Oh well. Just thinking about it makes my stomach hurt!

Anyway the u/s was perfect, doc said it was textbook, we saw the flicker of the HB too :) I'm officially 8 wks 2 days, which was exactly what I thought based on my last pd. 11/25, same due date I estimated from the calculator on the Bump.

  • Both u/s I've had have been transvaginal, so I didn't need to have a full bladder.

  • Yes and I only drank 32oz.  Well, maybe a few ounces less than that, but my instrux said 32oz 1 hr before.  They ended up taking me 15 mins early, so I had only drank my 30 oz about 45mins before and I was so happy the scan only took like 5 mins and I could pee right away.  Next time, drink a bit less, since the average bladder can only hold 17/18 oz, drinking 40 is just ridiculous.

  • See, ive never understood this. I've never once been told I need to have a full bladder, let alone drink water before hand.

  • Um YES!  I only had to drink 16 oz one hour prior to the appointment but when I got there they were running FORTY FIVE minutes behind.  DH was humiliated because I was a cranky biotch in the waiting room but honestly, my bladder has its limits!

  • I haven't had to do one yet for this pregnancy, but I did for my last pregnancy (I think 2x) and both times I drank way less than what they asked me to.  My bladder was still always full enough for them to do the ultrasounds.  I probably drank 1/2 of what they told me to drink.  Being pregnant I can't hold too much in my bladder!  Sorry yours was so uncomfortable :(  Definitely drink much less next time!

Having a full bladder makes it easy for the tech to see things on an external u/s.  My practice does both external and t/v so I drink the water prior to the appointment, they do the external u/s first, I empty my bladder, then they do the t/v.  Bladder doesn't need to be full for t/v.

Ditto this.  I have mine scheduled for this Friday and I even asked about drinking water before hand.  They looked at me like I had three heads.

Now, I always DO drink water simply because I have to give a urine sample each visit, but they have me give my sample first thing. Even before an u/s (transvag or abdominal), they have me pee. So strange.

  • I was told to drink 40.  By the time I got to the appt, I told the lady I couldn't possibly wait (I was already doing a slight pee dance).  DH laughed at me too, which made it worse because I started laughing.  So, I just went to the bathroom and didn't empty all the way.  It was pretty hard to stop myself, but in comparison to the agony of the ridiculously full bladder, it was wonderful.

U/S was 10 minutes later and worked just fine, bladder was completely full again already.

  • I learned with our 1st u/s with DS not to follow the instructions. I was so uncomfortable and thought my bladder was going to rupture! They want us to empty our bladder 2 hrs before, then drink a litre of fluids within the hour after emptying your bladder, then hold it, it's crazy. I just start drinking 500 ml of water 1 hour before the scan.

Had my scan yesterday afternoon. Baby is right on schedule  with my LMP, which is surprising b/c I thought I O'd late, the heartbeat was 170 bpm and I'm thrilled!

  • OMG yes! And its worse with 2 babies in there. I think for my next one I'm only drinking half the amount of water.

  • SLHurst11 - lol I was doing the pee dance at the counter too and told the lady I DEF could not wait!! Luckily they took me back after like 2 minutes of waiting.

But ughhh after hearing everyone's experiences, that makes me mad that my dr made me do that! Esp that I really didn't have to drink that much! Next time i'm def not doing the full amount. I did the external u/s, and they let me pee after that, and then they did the internal.

  • I'm so worried about this tomorrow because every time my bladder has been too full I start to feel extreme nausea. For my first appointment (just bloodwork) they made me wait an hour until giving my sample so I was literally dying!

  • I would have pulled over and peed :)  I have had 3 pg and tons of u/s and have never once had to have a full bladder (rather transvag or abdominal)  In fact on my 20 week paper work it says right on there "you do not need to have a full bladder" and the Dr always has me piac beforehand anyways.

  • omg yesss!!  I also made an asshat of myself and had to tell the receptionist that I was going to lose it if I didn't go back.  I absolutely believed I was going to urinate on myself in the lobby...luckily they understood and took me back right away, the tech laughed and said she hears that alot.  Mercifully she let me empty my bladder after the abdominal.

I am just not going to drink any extra water next time, I mean my bladder fills up in twenty minutes anyway

Wow, I had no idea you're supposed to have a full bladder for an u/s.  I've only had the transvaginal ones so far and they make you empty your bladder ahead of time.
