In the grand scheme of things, that's not too terribly bad. I would've been running through worst case scenarios like crazy! I'm on Synthroid and my TSH is a nice, low 1.5 so hopefully that'll work out just fine for you.
**PAIF/SAIF Welcome**
TTC #1 March 2010 - Nov 2012
Me: 29, PCOS (anov), Hashimoto's Disease // DH: 30, normal SA
3 Clomid, 1 Clomid/Menopur, 1 Menopur w/ TI (CX 4x's due to cysts) - All BFN
1 Clomid/Menopur, 2 Menopur, 1 Follistim w/ IUI - All BFN
RPL & Karyotype testing normal
Thats not too bad but too high for TTC. At least they're being proactive and putting you on Synthroid. I'm on it too, my TSH was all over the place until I took the meds. It was usually around where you're at now but its been as high as 6.5.
Good luck
Me: 33, Endocrine issues & FVL DH: 32, Nothing
NTNP 2009-2012 TTC since 2012:
Clomid, 2 IUI cycles, and 5 IVF cycles = BFN
FET #1 August 2013 = BFP! EDD 5/11/14
Jack dx at 19w1d with Dandy Walker on 12/16/13
Severe Pre-e /HELLP set in Jack born sleeping at 20w1d on 12/23/13
That would be my first choice for numbers to be bad, as well. Easily fixed. Also, 4.9 is high for the TTC world (where they want it under 2) but not really that high (within some labs' "normal" range,) so I'm guessing the language barrier is what made it sound so dire. Before TTC, I once had b/w come back with a TSH of 21, and my doc sounded quite anxious. I didn't feel any different, though.
Synthroid is easy to deal with, and should get everything right where it should be. It's never nice to have "bad" levels of anything, but at least it is one thing that is easy to fix.
Thanks guys. Sorry for the short response, I was in a boring class and trying not to get caught farting around.
I feel fine about the thyroid in that I have faith that treating it will help us TTC and that it's not a big deal. I'm not concerned about treating it at all.
On the other hand, I am PISSED that it is this high. I made a Dr appointment over a year ago specifically to discuss my thyroid - I had excessive weight gain, lethargy (I was constantly exhausted!!), always freezing (thought I had raynauds), hair loss on my scalp but growth on my chin.
The appointment was to specifically discuss my concern that I was hypothyroid, and because I knew we were going to TTC soon and how common thyroid problems are with IF and difficulty TTC.
My Dr told me I was just fine and to get to the gym and put down the cookies. I'm livid that I could have been treating this for a year and that might have affected whether or not we would have had a kid by now. PISSED.
(I moved cross country so I don't see that Dr anymore)

Oh man I would be SO pissed too. They couldn't order a blood test? Ugh I would make sure you write that doctor a bad review.

I had it done then. I remember her telling me it was 3.6 and that 3.6 was cool for TTC and pregnancy. I didn't get a copy of it, I just trusted it.
Turns out it was 4.2 then. They lied to me! I'm sure it was a mistake, not malicious, but I work in healthcare!! This is not rocket science!! I'm so pissed at them!
