Mommas who have been induced...

How was it.. Good, bad, and the ugly please.

My water broke with DD. I woke up, took a quick shower, and headed to the hospital ( we live about 35-40mins away). I felt great! No contractions... Not a single one. We got to the hospital and by the time I was hooked up to the machine, and changed into a gown- it was 4am. They checked me- I was 5cm, 90%. They asked if I wanted an Epi- I said yes. They have to have a full IV bag of liquid in you, and bloodwork drawn and in the lab before they'll give it to you- so they started the IV on a super fast drip. The bag was empty, and I felt some strange pressure, and asked if I could use the restroom... They unhooked me, and I went potty. (#2) after a few minutes I hopped back into bed, and the nurse was there to draw my blood... And the contractions started. And they came on hard and fast... I could hardly hold still. The nurse was kinda like 'Oooo honey, your fine' but my mom insisted she check me. BAM. I was fully 10cm dilated, and pushing. The nurse told me not to push and ran to get a Dr. She came back into the room and I asked if I was getting an Epi- she said 'No honey- your getting a baby!'.  Dr was there in about 10 mins so around 5 am I started pushing. 6:25 I was exhausted and DD was born with assistance of the Vacuum.

Long story short- I had a SUPER fast first delivery. I fully dilated in under 1/2 hr. They built a new hospital so I will be delivering #2 their, but it's about 10-15 mins further away.

The dr today mentioned maybe scheduling something closer to, and I said ok. But now that I'm thinking about it- I'm TERRIFIED. granted, it will be peace of mind knowing I'll make it to the hospital in time (lol) but I've heard such bad things about Pictocin... Is that the only drug they use to induce or are there different options? I had NuMorphine in my IV while pushing with LO, and NEVER AGAIN WILL I DO TH At. Horrible. Just horrible.

Who used Pictocin, and HONESTLY- how was it?

Re: Mommas who have been induced...

  • Wow, I'm jealous you had such a speedy L&D!

I was induced with Gavin, and honestly, was not that bad. Dr. broke my water around 6am, I was given pitocin shortly thereafter. I was not feeling much pain, but at 5 cm they asked if I wanted the epi and I took it.  I had mild back labor, and I progressed much more slowly than you did. However, I had a magical epi that lasted all the way through delivery, so I did not feel an ounce of THAT pain. My guy didn't make his arrival until 9:51pm.

  • I was induced with my now 1 yo and it took freakin' forever. I was beyond the max dose of pitocin and didn't feel a single contraction. There were a few other non-induction related issues, but the short of it is it took probably 22 hours to get the kid out. Thankfully most of it was spent pain-free due to my apparent freakishly high pain tolerance : ) I did have wicked back labor toward the end. That sucked.

This was my first time being given pitocin and it was my understanding it frequently takes a while to get things going. That said, they had to get her out and she wasn't ready on her own, so we did what we had to do.

I have no information on this but your LO is adorable!

  • I was induced with DS and it was a pretty good experience.  They started pitocin at 6am, by 8:45am I begged for the epi because I had gone from no contractions to holy shiit and DS was born at 4:45pm.

  • My water broke on it's own. I had been 3cm & 100% for about 2 weeks prior. I went in when my water broke at 9pm, at 6AM I had only made about a cm progress so they decided to start pitocin.

Honestly, it wasn't bad at all. I was really scared because of all the pit horror stories but my contrax stayed steady. I was able to breathe through them and don't really remember much pain at all. They checked me around 12:30 and said I was just over 7cm and told me if I wanted the epi I'd need to get it then because things were picking up. Later I was told there is no real time limit on getting an epi so I wish I sometimes wonder if I could have held out a bit longer but either way, I got it then. She was born just before 3pm.

  • There is a BIG difference between getting pitocin after labor has started on it's own and having pitocin kick-start labor.  With DS1 I got pitocin to "speed things along" but was already in labor and it was fine.  With DS2 I got pitocin when I wasn't having any contractions on my own.  As soon as they broke my water, it was holy hell.  The contractions came on so suddenly and so fast.  I got my epidural as soon as I could and by that time, 30 min later, I had 1 contraction on top of the other.  The 1st contraction wasn't even over when the next one started up.  It was horrible.  Even when I got the epidural, the contractions were so severe, the pressure was almost unbearable.  I went from nothing to DS2 almost falling out on his own within 3.5hrs.  I will go until 41wks to try to go into labor on my own before I even think about being induced.  What a nightmare.

Plus, being induced increases your chances of needing a csection.  About 1/2 my friends who were induced ended up with csections after 24hours of labor.  YIKES

  • I had a great induction experience.  I went in the night before and got a foley bulb (they take a foley catheter, put it through your cervix and blow up the balloon as much as they can to put pressure on your cervix so that it will dilate) and went to sleep.  I slept great, woke up around 6am with bad contractions.  I had gone from 2cm when I was admitted to 6cm just with the foley bulb.

I got in the shower for a while which helped my contractions, and then got back in bed where my water broke as soon as I got comfortable!  I got an epidural then and they started pitocin.  It took from 8-noon to get me to 10cm and they had to go up on the pitocin a few times, but I had an awesome epidural and didn't feel much.  However the worst part was I pushed from 12:15-1:45 before DD came out!  Other than the pushing, my induction went great!

I was really nervous before hand, but I wouldn't be overly concerned with it again.  The big thing is make sure your nurses are aggressive with it.  If you're not progressing, increase the pitocin.  If you're going to fast, turn it down.  Just like any medical procedure, if your nurses are comfortable with it, you will be fine.

  • I was induced with DD, and I didn't think the pitocin was bad. I was started on it at 5:45 AM, and I delivered at 1:15 PM. The part I had a hard time with was the Cervidil (used to ripen the cervix). It gave me HORRIBLE cramping. I remember asking the nurse if I was miscarrying, because the cramps were so severe.

  • I had a GREAT induction and I was even 4 weeks early. They put in cytotec at midnight and let that work overnight, and then at 6 or 7 started pitocin and broke my water. Contractions hurt but weren't unbearable. Eventually they recommended I get the epidural (I was going to get one anyway but they wanted me to get it to help with my bp). I'm not sure how far in I got it, maybe a little before noon? By 3:30 I was fully dilated but he was still too high, so they let me labor down for an hour so he could drop on his own. By 4:30 my OB was there and I started pushing, and he was born at 4:59.

The only thing I didn't like about my induction was that I wasn't allowed to move around in the early parts of labor. But I don't think that's the norm - I was hooked up to a lot of machinery because of my bp.

Otherwise it wasn't a long process, or a horribly painful process. Really it was so great that at my follow-up appointment a week after he was born I told the nurses my labor and delivery was so easy I'd have another baby right away ;).

  • I definitely agree with lavet22! I was induced to get things started with my first daughter and it was AWFUL!!!! Started Pitocin at 1030 pm. The nurse came in around 1am an said that the baby was not reacting well to the Pitocin and that she was in a lot of stress so she turned it off and said the Dr would be in in the morning. She told me that there was a huge possibility that I would need a C section. That scared that crap out of me because all I could think of was that I should have waited and this could have been avoided.

Dr came in and started the Pitocin again in the morning and since I was starting to dilate, they left it on. Long story short baby was highly stressed pooped inside me (forget the name for that :)) and at 330 after only being able to lay on my right side to relieve stress on her the Dr had me push, did an episiotomy and used a vacuum to get her out. I ended up with a 3 almost 4th degree tear and my daughter had a huge hematoma on her head for almost 2 months.

With my second daughter my water broke and I went into labor in my own was helped out by Pitocin and had a wonderful delivery!!! Bottom line if you dont need to get induced I WOULD NOT recommend it!! Good luck with whatever route you choose to take!!

  • Is there a medical reason for him suggesting an induction? Call me conservative, but I wouldn't opt for an induction without a medical reason. Just because the hospital is a little further away wouldn't convince me. Just leave for the hospital a little sooner than you normally would.

You're still early in the game so don't think that just because you told them yes already means you can't change your mind.

  • I would never be induced in your situation.  I would rather risk giving birth in the car on the way to the hospital than try to induce labor before my body is ready.

You had a fast, uncomplicated labor with your daughter so why risk an unnecessary induction that increases the risk for complications like fetal distress, c-sections, etc.  Anytime you "mess" with labor you are putting you and your baby at risk.  Also, like the PP said, you can change your mind about any medical procedure because it is your body.

My water broke at 40 weeks, 3 days with DD and I never went into labor on my own.  After 24 hours of pitocin labor (in which my epi failed), I had been pumped full of so many bags of pit and fluids that I felt like I had been hit by a truck.  I was so swollen for weeks!  Luckily my daughter was able to handle the pitocin contractions until the end and then I was probably minutes away from a c-section.  Also, because I had so many fluids, I really think it negatively impacted my milk coming in and caused me to have low supply and difficulty breastfeeding (my milk didn't come in until the night of the 5th day).  And of course, pitocin contractions with a failed epidural are not fun.

I wish you the best in making your decision.  An induction could work out fine or you could have complications.  I would rather let nature take it's course and only use inductions if medically needed.

  • Oh Nmmsest06- yea we were just talking, its nothing set in stone by any means. Wayyyy too early, lol. No medical reason besides I went fast with my first, thats it. I will leave as soon as my water breaks or contractions begin- IF they begin. Thats the thing- last time they didn't start until I was pushing...

I was just curious. I've personally always heard horror stories about being induced and Pictocin, Im glad to hear some good induction stories- Thanks ladies!

Im defiantly wanting to hold out since it happened naturally the first time around... I was just curious of mommas' opinions that have gone through it before. Good to know there is a difference between using it to jump start labor, and using it to help labor along- I had no idea.

Thanks again ladies, I really appreciate all of your stories and input.

  • Hey dear,
I was induced with DD and it was smooth sailing.  They induced me a week early because we were having some complications.  Went in at 4 am they gave me some vag suppository thing to get dialation rolling, I slept...started the Pit at about 7, contractions started rolling around 8, Epi at 10.  Then the scare...DD's heartbeat dropped off the radar so the nurses and docs and everyone came in and I had people poking and proding me all over...literally.  So they stopped the pit, the epi, pretty much all induced labor and got her back on track and then we started the pit again without the epi.  OUCH, but heck after we stopped the epi and got rolling again I progressed from a 6-10 in about 40 mins and 15 mins after starting to push I had her a 3:15 in the afternoon.  The docs know what to do, make sure you have a doctor you trust, it makes it so much easier!

    Good Luck!

I was induced and will be telling my OB I'd rather have a C/S then ever have to go through that experience again.  For me it was horrible.  I had pre E.

  • I had a great induction experience. Cervidil at 7pm. Out at 7am. Epidural at 7am at ::blushes:: 1-2 cm. I worked there and got crap for it, but still got it! Pitocin by 8:30. Water broke at 4pm. Complete at 5:30. Pushing at 6:00, baby at 6:22. Placenta... 7pm or so, after a d&c.

My induction was not typical. If your cervix is ripe (bishop score over 5), your induction will go faster than with a low score. In my career, I have seen quite a few 3-4 day marathon inductions. Most did result in vaginal deliveries, but by that time, the moms were too exhausted and hungry to care.

  • I too am jealous of your quick delivery.  I was induced for medical reasons (I have epilepsy and we had just moved 2 hours away from the hospital; the doc didn't want me to go into natural labor because we didn't know how my body would handle it).

Anyways, I went in the night before, had 3 doses of Cytotec and contractions 2-3 minutes apart the entire night.  At 8 am the doctor came and broke my water and started the Pitocin.  The contractions got more intense, and did so every time they increased the Pit.  I did not get an epidural or have any other medicine, and by 3:45 I was pushing and Auden was here by 4.30!  :)   For being induced, I reacted really well to the medicine; I was not dilated at all, and was only effaced 50%.

I just can't get over your history, for your sake it might give you great piece of mind to have it at least scheduled.  Did you go early with your DD?

Yes! I guess I should have mentioned that as well... I was Due June 10th and had her May 26th. Duh- I should have mentioned that, sorry. I never made it to the uncomfortable last few weeks.
