What do you do about bugs (indoors, not out)? ::shiver::

We've had a few, um, unwelcome visitors lately.  Embarrassed  Ewwwww!!!

I am obviously (obviously!!) not okay with this.  (Particularly this specific type of visitor).  I'm nervous because "they" say it's going to be an especially bad year because of the weather, so I'm not inclined to wait and hope this was a fluke.

But I also don't love the idea of a pest control company spraying nasty chemicals all over our house where the kids play all day.  It's made worse in my mind because our rooms are small-ish, so if they spray the baseboards, there's not a ton of free open floor space, if that makes sense.

Am I missing an option?  Thoughts?  What do you do?

  • We have a pest control guy spray every month.

I'm not in love with the idea, but I'm also not in love with the idea of bugs on my babies.  FWIW, I have him skip the playroom.

  • we've had some folks come and only spray the outside, and we'll use organic spray like lemongrass stuff (which stinks horribly but is ok for the kids and me being pregnant).

Also depending on what bugs you have and how many there are of them, you can also find other non chemical things that can work - try googling.

  • Honestly, I usually run screaming in the other direction OR throw one of my cats at it and hope they take care of it.

However when none of those options actually works , then I resort to traps.

My apartment is regularly exterminated, but I still I get the ocassional flying insect here and there but usually the problem in warm weather is ants. So I buy those little ant trap things and put them in the corners and that usually takes care of it.

Could you maybe look for an exterminator that uses water based pesticides as opposed to chemical based? My apartment complex exterminates once a month but it's water based so it's safe in households that have pets and kids.

  • DH sprays the outside of the house a few times a year with Ortho Home Defense (I think that's what it's called).  You can get it at Lowe's or Home Depot.  He sprays around the foundation, really good in the doorways and then in the basement along the floor and around any windows.  He never sprays our main living area except the front and back doorways which is mostly outside.

  • We've been using the ant traps. They worked pretty well at first and now the ants are back. When DH and I placed them around the kitchen we had to pick spots where the cats wouldn't get at them. They are a good size to get pawed around. Our kitchen has three exterior walls and is where we'd seen the most ants. Though we've had an occasional few in other rooms. With ants I read something about cinnamon. Which I tried, but ours was old enough that it probably wasn't potent enough.

  • Last year we had the outside sprayed and it only worked so-so. Fewer ants, but still some, and still plenty of spiders (but fewer in the eaves and other outside places). That's all we mostly get other than occasional pincher looking bugs (don't know what they're called). This year I considered spraying indoors but chickened out so we had the outside sprayed again by a more reputable company with a 6 month guarantee. Fingers crossed! We've still seen a couple ants since they sprayed but hoping they're residual that were already in pre-spraying...

  • Ugh. Ugh. Ugh. We've been having an ant problem. I want to call an exterminator, but DH keep thinking he can "find where they're coming in" and patch up those cracks, etc. They keep coming.

DH makes a big deal of stomping on them and saying "Out of my house, ant!" (DH is not the world's most mature individual sometimes), so now James does the same thing. For some reason, it really disturbs me to see one of my kids killing something, even if it's a bug.

  • We use an exterminator.  I'm not wild about, but it's a necessity in FL.  The only internal spray was on the first treatment.  Subsequent treatments have only been on the exterior.  If we had a problem, I'm sure they would re-treat inside, but we haven't.

  • We spray indoors and out with Terminix.  I'm honestly ok with it.  We do try to time it so they come on a Friday and then our maids come on the following Tuesday and supposedly that is enough time that the mopping of our hardwoods and baseboards doesn't affect the effectiveness of the spray.  I just can't deal with the bugs and it gets so bad here, and this year will be so much worse with no freeze over the winter.
