Opinions needed - Over due LO/DH related

Let me start by saying I know that labor can happen quickly.  LO is due tomorrow, and I'm showing no signs of progression, no contractions, etc.

Would you give your DH/SO the okay to enter a fishing tournament on Sunday if LO still hasn't decided to make his debut?  DH has already said he would have his cellphone with him and would be headed home the second I called him if things changed.  It would take him about an hour to get home.

I am on the fence about this.  On one hand, I want DH home with me but we don't really have anything planned.  On the other hand, I don't want DH to waste his whole weekend sitting at home doing nothing just b/c I "might" go into labor.

  • Yep, I would have no problem letting DH do something like that.

  • I would go for it if I were you, so long as you have someone a bit closer who can take you to the hospital if need be. My DH works 50 minutes from or house so he was that far away everyday!

An hour away sounds fine. I would have let my DH go. Chances are that things wont progress crazy fast and an hour will be plenty of time for him to come home and get you for the hospital.

That is what I think too, but I didn't know if it was crazy!

It would be an hour minimum to get home, depending on where they actually were on the river when/if I call. We have no one else here that could get me to the hospital, but I think I'd be okay waiting for DH.

I was leaning towards telling DH to go fishing, but wanted to make sure I wasn't crazy for considering it.

  • I say let him go. The first one "usually" takes awhile. (22 hours for me)  Early labor can last several hours. I will be a nice get a way for him before baby arrives. Do you have some girl friends that might want to join you for lunch and mani/pedi's that day while he's gone? Just a thought. ;-)

  • My SO is a realtor and is often 1-2 hours away. I'm overdue as of today but he's going to continue to schedule his appointments as usual, knowing he may have to drop everything and cme home. I'm very mug OK with the arrangement. I'm a FTM ad I'm expecting labor to take many hours. I'll be fine if I have the weather the first few alone.
  • You all make me feel so much better about my decision!  I didn't want people to give me the side eye for telling him to go fishing.

  • sure, I don't see an issue with that.

mine is working in the city and if i went into labor at rush hour it would take him an hour+ to get home (thought it is only 20 miles). I don't see an issue with that as it is EXTREMELY unlikely a person would go into labor and have the baby within an hour.

  • I'd be fine with that as long as it wasn't a several hour drive away.
  • no side-eye or judgement but I wouldnt let my current DH go (apparently I am the only one LOL).  I am on my 3rd baby tho!   with my second child, the ex-DH was 2 hours late to the hospital because he was at  work and had to travel, it was no big deal really, I didn't need him for anything I got myself to the hospital and checked in etc... and he was still there for the birth.  For my current DH this is his first and I want him to experience everything from the start, so I havent been letting him out of my sight. (not really) but we definitely try not to be too far apart for very long.

*the only thing I would recommend for you is to make sure he will have cell phone reception while at the tournament. I have no idea where its located of course, but if its going to be out in the county it may be a dead zone.

  • My only issue would be cell reception. My DH is the kind that goes out of network and doesn't realize it-makes me nuts. But an hour drive is no biggie.
  • I would be OK with it as long as I had someone there, or within a few minutes, with me. I'd want to know that just in case something crazy happened I wouldn't be alone. When I went into labor I didn't tell him for a few hours because I didn't believe it was the real deal but just knowing that he was there made me feel better.

  • I'd let him go.
  • Yeah, let him go for it! The chances that you are going into labor exactly on your due date are slim anyway :/

  • No judgement from me but I would not have let my hubby go. He never would have anyway though, thats just the way he is. He pretty much wanted us to stay home from 34wks on in fear that i might go into labor.

Also, many people are saying FTMs don't have quick labors... mine was only 6 hours. An hour after labor started, i was asking for an epi because the contractions were so bad and coming very quickly. I know this isn't the norm but it's something to consider.

Also- i had no signs of labor beforehand.

  • I wouldn't have any problems with it. DH works an hour away (we live in the country and everything's pretty much an hour away lol) so it's the norm for me. As long as he leaves right away you'll be fine.
